May 20, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta
Patrick McMahon of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at the age of 76 years.
Pat was Born in Calgary to Kay (d. 2007) and George McMahon (d. 1978). He was brother to Polly, Suzy (d. 2018), Bill, John and Kathy. He attended Strathcona School for Boys from kindergarten until grade eight; completed junior and senior high school at Ridley College; in the post-secondary realm, he graduated with an Associate in Arts degree from Menlo College, and attended University of Alberta and University of Calgary, where he studied Urban Planning in the Faculty of Environmental Design. He worked for the Calgary Regional Planning Commission and the City of Airdrie Planning Department where he was proud of his work in drafting the City Plan. He became a mentor and friend to many young planners at the City of Airdrie. He lived in Airdrie for many years until returning to Calgary in 2019.
Pat is survived by his daughter, Erin; son-in-law, Aaron Unger; his beloved grandson, Nate; and Nate’s loving grandmother, Susan McMahon; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins too numerous to mention. He was predeceased by his partner Sandra Murtack and their daughter Jasmine.
Pat was a happy, jovial, talented man who was never afraid to speak his own mind and share his wicked sense of humour. His many talents included being a crack shot on the trap shooting range, strumming a flamenco guitar, riding a motorcycle and Master on the good ship Jasmine with his longtime friend Cliff Longpre. Pat was a fly fisherman, hunter, a keen golfer, and was a familiar face amongst the soccer crowd in Calgary having coached girls and women's soccer for 20 years. He was a staunch supporter of the Calgary Chinooks Soccer Club and religiously wore red, black, and white on game days.
In his later years, he spent hundreds of hours in his woodworking shop, when he wasn’t happily ensconced in a reading chair with a book, his beloved dog Cleo at his side. His family and friends remember him as a kind, warmhearted, generous man who loved to laugh and tell tall tales. Who could resist his rendition of "An amusing story about a lady and her dog"?
