Obituary of Lorne Willson Scott

Lorne Willson Scott, beloved husband of Bonnie Scott (nee MacGregor) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at the age of 80 years.

Lorne was born in Calgary, AB on January 27, 1943. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a Law Degree in 1967 and was called to the Alberta Bar in 1968. Lorne practised as a criminal defense counsel for over 25 years appearing before all levels of Court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He eventually practised corporate and real estate development law. Lorne was appointed King’s Counsel in 1986 in recognition of his contributions to the profession and community.

Lorne married his first wife, Mavis James. They had two children, Sean Scott and Rachael Scott. He married Bonnie MacGregor in 1977 at which time Lorne became stepdad to Ryan Smith. Lorne and Bonnie then had a daughter, Sarah Scott, in 1978.

Lorne accomplished much through his life. He was exceptionally proud of his children and his law firm, Scott Venturo Rudakoff LLP. He built his life and his career with the philosophy of family and community.

He will be most remembered for his leadership, integrity, mentorship and, above all, his love of life, family, friends, colleagues and, last but not least, the vocal stylings of Francis Albert Sinatra.

Besides his loving wife Bonnie, Lorne is survived by his son, Sean Scott (Lisa); two daughters, Rachael Bergen (Aaron) and Sarah Scott (Jeff Pashelka); his grandchildren, Chase Lipinski, Anna and Anders Bergen, Effie Smith and Hannah Taylor. Lorne is also survived by one brother Chic Scott (Kathy) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Lorne was predeceased by his parents, Charlie and Lillian Scott and stepson, Ryan Smith.  

Lorne will be truly missed by everyone he met. His love of life shone through in everything he did. Lorne was kind, generous, welcoming and supportive to all. He was a true friend.

A Celebration of Lorne’s Life will be held at Calgary Golf & Country Club (1 block west of the intersection of Elbow Drive & 50th Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow.
