Obituary of Sigrún Hulda Magnason

 

February 28, 1948 – Reykjavik, Iceland

May 26, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

 

 

Sigrún Magnason (nee Garðarsdóttir), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, May 26, 2023, at the age of 75 years.

 

Sigrùn was born in Reykjavik, Iceland on February 28, 1948.

 

Sigrùn married Guðmundur (Mark) Magnason in 1968. She graduated as a registered nurse in Iceland and moved to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in 1977 with her family. She was very proud to work in nursing and spent most of her career working in a family medicine practice in Calgary.

 

Sigrùn met her second spouse, H. Lloyd Eriksson in 1999 and they lived together at their home in Calgary, and they spent many years snow birding in Arizona with friends. Sigrùn enjoyed travel and outdoor activities including cross country skiing.  She had fond memories of her travels to Australia, New Zealand, Greece and her many trips to Sweden and Iceland.

 

Sigrùn will be most remembered for her warm spirit and hospitality, that resulted in her many close friendships in both Canada and in Iceland. She was active in the Icelandic community and frequently took in guests from Iceland, including international students relocating to Calgary for studies. She maintained close connections with her extended family and friends in Iceland even while living in Canada.

 

Sigrùn is survived by her sons, Magni Magnason and Garðar Magnason; her grandson, Björn Alden Magnason (Magni); her first spouse, Guðmundur Magnason; daughter-in-law, Kimberley Magnason (Garðar); stepdaughter, Britta Eriksson, all of Calgary; and stepdaughter, Robin Eriksson of Vancouver.

 

Sigrun is also survived by her two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Anna Sigriður Garðarsdóttir (Skúli Björnsson), and Sylvía Garðarsdóttir (Gunnar); a brother, Garðar Garðarsson (Sölvína), and brother-in-law, Ágúst Karlsson (Erla), all of Reykjavík, Iceland; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

 

Sigrun was predeceased by her mother, Kristín Sölvadóttir (1981); father, Garðar Þórhallsson (2002); father-in-law, Magni Guðmundsson (2000); mother-in-law, Ása Hjörtadóttir (2008); her common-law spouse, H. Lloyd Eriksson in 2023; as well as by her sister, Erla Garðarsdóttir (Ágúst) in 2010; brother-in-law, Gunnar Dyrset (Sylvía); and her sister-in-law Sölvína (Gardar Þ.) in 2015, all of Reykjavík, Iceland.

 

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Sunday, June 4, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mrs. Magnason’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service.
