Obituary of Carmel Theresa Bonnell

August 20, 1955 - Placentia, Newfoundland

June 16, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Carmel Theresa Bonnell. Carmel passed away peacefully on Friday, June 16, 2023, at the age of 67 years surrounded by her family.

Carmel was born in Placentia, Newfoundland on August 20, 1955, and was the fifth of six children of Raymond and Florence Connors. Carmel grew up in Placentia and met her husband Mike in February of 1975. Carmel married the love of her life on July 31, 1976.

Mike’s work in the Military led them across Canada and around the world, and Carmel made a home for her family in many different communities and countries including Germany, New Brunswick, Ontario, Newfoundland, and Alberta.  For the last 30 years, Calgary, Alberta was called home.

To anyone that knew Carmel, knew that she was kind, generous and always knew how to put a smile on someone’s face. Carmel was supportive, loving, selfless, devoted, fun, committed and absolutely full of life. Her most cherished times were hanging out with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family, and friends. She loved going to bingo and she enjoyed travelling to sun filled destinations with her husband Mike and other family and friends over the years. She enjoyed beating her husband at Yahtzee and was the self proclaimed and undefeated champion of the world.

Carmel was a wife, sister, auntie, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and will always be remembered with love and missed by her husband Mike and children Chris, Mark (Wife Kari) and Michael (Wife Amy) as well as her grandchildren Bailey, Alexa, and Colby as well as her great grand child Annabella among many other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and family that is too many to list. Carmel touched the lives of so many people and she will be incredibly missed by all.

Carmel did not want a service and her wishes were to be cremated. Therefore, in her honour, and in lieu of flowers, donations, or any other means, and should you choose and desire to, Carmel would prefer you start a random pay it forward chain at your local favourite drive through, or perhaps purchase a bag of groceries for a stranger in need at your local grocery store or maybe volunteer your time at a local charity.  Anything at all to give back to your community or help another in need is what she would have wanted.

In appreciating the smallest of things, her inspirational and encouraging spirit will live on in us all and in living memory of Carmel Bonnell, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.
