Obituary of Delores Barbara Moroney

January 18, 1933 – Acadia Valley, Alberta

June 19, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Delores Barbara Moroney passed away peacefully, surrounded by friends and family, on Monday, June 19, 2023, at the age of 90.

Delores was born on the family farm near Acadia Valley, Alberta on January 18, 1933, to Nicholas and Katherine Skappak, both immigrants from southeast Austria, now known as Ukraine.  She was the third of six children and grew up in a close-knit, hardworking, fun-loving, farming family.

Delores left the farm to attend girl’s school in Oyen, AB, then moved to St. Theresa’s Convent College in Medicine Hat for her senior years. It was here that she nurtured her Christian faith before going on to study education at The University of Calgary from 1951-53.  While at university she met her beloved husband of 49 years Jerome Moroney, who predeceased her in 2005.  Del and Jerry married in 1956 and went on to have four children.  Del leaves behind Claire of Calgary; Tim (Denise) of Aurora, Colorado; Kathleen (John Davison) of London UK, Mike of Calgary; as well as her four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and close friend Al Heschl.  Del was predeceased by her sister Mary and husband Herb Brausse; Joe Skappak and his wife Dolores; and sister-in-law Fredina Skappak, all of Acadia Valley. She is survived by her three brothers Walter Skappak of Acadia Valley; Don Skappak (Judy) of Calgary; and Dennis Skappak (Jan) of Delta, BC.  She also leaves behind her sister-in-law Jill Moroney of Calgary, and many extended family members from both sides of her family.

Del began her career teaching grade school at St. Charles in Calgary, then over the years, enjoyed teaching piano and English to new Canadians.  She ended her working life as a Coordinator for The Red Cross in Southern Alberta.  In later life, Del continued to enjoy music as well as travel, especially to Europe and Asia. She was also very active in many Christian groups such as the Girl Guides of Canada, The Catholic Women’s League, grief support groups, and other church-centered associations. She leaves behind many dear friends from these groups with whom she loved spending her social time.
