Obituary of Maria Georgina Fernandez

June 27, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Maria Georgina Fernandez passed away on Tuesday, June 27 2023 at the age of 70 years.

Maria was born in Los Vilos, Chile and graduated from the Accounting Program at Instituto Commercial Blas Canas. She was self-employed, and volunteered her time in support of many social justice causes and in service of those who crossed her path who were in need of a hand up. She was passionate about her grandkids, her children, and her husband - the love of her life.

Maria was proud of her children, her grandkids, and of her six-decades-long friendship with her boarding school friends. After retirement, Maria visited Spain, falling in love with Madrid, and always wanting but not being able to return. Other notable destinations were Rapa Nui, where she found peace, a bus tour through Europe, where she did it up in Prague, and a trip to the Maritimes where she fell in love with Newfoundland and its people. But, over continents traveled, her favourite place in the world was Waterton.

Maria is survived by her beloved husband, Alamiro Fernandez; three sons, Pablo, Salvador, and Carlos; two grandchildren Nathan and Isabelle; two brothers, Pablo and Jorge; sister Letty; and countless nieces and nephews 
Maria joins her abuelita Laura; her parents, Maria and Jorge; brother Victor; her beloved godfather Nino; and all her beloved pets, Nino, Barney, Martin, Richie, Emi, Lucky, Lady, Dakota, and Kelowna, who were waiting for her on the other side.

Maria will be most remembered for her devotion to her family, her laugh, her spirit, her advice and her cooking.

A Celebration of Maria’s life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Friday, July 7, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Maria’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.

Maria’s family thanks her relatives, her friends, Canada, and the staff on unit 94 at the Rockyview General Hospital.

Maria Georgina Fernandez (10 de septiembre de 1952 - 27 de junio de 2023, Calgary, Alberta) falleció el martes 27 de junio de 2023, a la edad de 70 años.

María nació en Los Vilos, Chile y se graduó del programa de contabilidad en el Instituto Comercial Blas Cañas. Trabajaba por cuenta propia y ofreció su tiempo como voluntaria en apoyo de muchas causas de justicia social y al servicio de aquellos que se cruzaron en su camino y que necesitaban ayuda. Le apasionaban sus nietos, sus hijos y su esposo, el amor de su vida.

María estaba orgullosa de sus hijos, sus nietos y de su amistad de seis décadas con sus amigas del internado. Despues de su jubilación, María visitó España, enamorándose de Madrid, y siempre queriendo pero no pudiendo volver. Otros destinos notables fueron Rapa Nui, donde encontró la paz; una gira en bús por Europa, donde supo sobrehacerlo en Praga, y un viaje a las provincias Marítimas, donde se enamoró de Newfoundland y su gente. Pero, a través de los continentes viajados, su lugar favorito en el mundo era Waterton.

María la sobreviven su amado esposo Alamiro Fernández, sus tres hijos Pablo, Salvador y Carlos, sus dos nietos Nathan e Isabelle, sus dos hermanos, Pablo y Jorge, su hermana Letty, e innumerables sobrinas y sobrinos.

María se une con su abuelita Laura, sus padres María y Jorge, su hermano Víctor, su querido padrino Nino y todas sus amadas mascotas Niño, Barney, Martin, Richie, Emi, Lucky, Lady, Dakota y Kelowna, que la estaban esperando. 

María será más recordada por su devoción a su familia, su risa, su espíritu, sus consejos y su forma de cocinar.
 
Habrá una celebración de la vida de María en McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) el viernes 7 de julio de 2023 a las 2:00 p.m. Una recepción continuara en el Centro de Hospitalidad de la Funeraria. Para aquellos que no puedan atender en persona, habrá una transmisión en vivo del servicio (informacion abajo). Los que no puedan verlo en vivo, se publicará una grabación del servicio. Las condolencias, recuerdos y fotos también seran compartidas.
