Arthur Levins

Obituary of Arthur Crawford Levins

November 28, 1920 – Calgary, Alberta

July 14, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Art was born in Calgary, AB, and raised on a farm near Stanmore, Alberta. Art joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in 1941 and served until 1967 in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Newfoundland, and the Arctic, retiring as a Staff Sergeant. Following his service, he joined Manpower and Immigration as an Investigator in Vancouver and retired for a second time in 1985.

Art and Marion (nee Huck) were married in 1950, after he returned from serving in the Arctic for five years. They returned to Calgary in 1998 to live closer to family and Marion passed away in 1999. Several years later Art met Norma Nesbitt, a dear friend and companion and they travelled and enjoyed life together until her death in 2016.

During his years of retirement, he was a member of the RCMP Veterans Association and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Art loved to golf and refused to use a golf cart until after his 95th birthday. He was a gracious host and an avid traveller. There were not many cruise destinations left that he hadn’t experienced.

When Art turned 100 on November 28, 2020, COVID restrictions prevented the planned celebration of his historic milestone. However, as Art looked on from his fourth-floor balcony, dozens of friends, family and members of the RCMP Veterans Association lined Seton Blvd. S.E. honking, carrying signs and waiving Canadian Flags to wish him a happy 100th birthday. The RCMP Veterans Association also organized a drive-by tribute of around 40 RCMP, Calgary Police Service and Calgary Fire Department vehicles.

Art is survived by two special nieces, Lynda Gutor and Shirley Buyer, as well as numerous other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife Marion in 1999 and by his brother George and sister Grace Garrett.

The family wish to thank the staff of Auburn Heights Retirement Residence for the loving care Art received while living there.
