Duncan McIntyre

Obituary of Duncan Campbell McIntyre

March 11, 1958 – Calgary, Alberta

July 17, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Family and friends of Duncan Campbell McIntyre are extremely sad to announce his sudden passing on Monday, July 17, 2023, at age 65.  Born and raised in Calgary, AB, he was the son of the late Isobel and Earl McIntyre.

It is hard to describe Duncan in just a few words, as his big, charismatic personality lit up the room.  With many close friends that were more like family, he made everyone in his presence feel welcome, special, and loved.  Duncan was easily the funniest person you knew, and it was impossible not to be in a good mood when he was cracking jokes, making impressions or, in general, being his jovial self.  His friendships spanned decades – whether from his early days, Bishop Grandin High School, his long career as a surveyor with Alberta Transportation, or a random meeting at a sports game, Duncan made fast friendships that lasted a lifetime.  He was especially fond of these close relationships when his health faded in the last few years.  Visits, meals out and other adventures made his day.  Duncan’s friends were his people – his closest confidants, with whom he shared laughter, tears, and memorable moments.  He enjoyed their time together and was grateful for their many years of friendship shared.

Duncan was a true sportsman, passionate about spectating, playing, and coaching.  While he loved almost every sport, his true passion was lacrosse.  Duncan played for many years and enthusiastically passed along his joy for comradery, competitiveness, and adrenaline as he coached his son Scott.  Duncan’s musical taste was second to none, and he always knew the perfect tune for every moment. He was a talented artist with perfect penmanship who could draw anything and was capable of amazing woodwork.  This natural ability was beneficial in his second career as a carpenter, where he completed beautiful furniture pieces and many home renovation projects.  He was a clever builder, working for many years with the University of Calgary.

Duncan is survived by his children, Brianne (Tom), Scott (Nicolle); granddaughter Preston, and the mother of his children, Maryanne.  He is also survived by his brother, Michael (Laura), and nieces, Alison and Erin (Liam), as well as many well-loved friends and extended family, including fur-grandbabies: Steven, Edward, Luna, Douglas, and Dumpling.  Duncan loved all animals and always forged a strong bond with pets, but there was an extra space in his heart for his much-loved dog, Toby.  With love in his heart for his fur-friends lost over the years, we are sure Duncan has crossed the rainbow bridge, joining them on the other side.  Duncan was hilarious, generous, and memorable, with the kindest heart.  He is so loved and will be missed even more.
