Obituary of Jerry Clement

October 27, 1946 – Ponteix, Saskatchewan

August 2, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Jerry Clement, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at the age of 76 years.

Jerry was born in Ponteix, SK, on October 27, 1946, and grew up in Val Marie, SK, a small town on the edge of what is now Grasslands National Park. This became a special place to him as he was something of a conservationist himself. It was here that the seeds were planted for his large crop of hobbies. Perhaps the first was his love for all things automotive, one particular plymouth GTX garnering him the title of “the fastest car in southern Saskatchewan.” Driving around the countryside with a fly rod and camera in tow, he soon moved to Brandon, MB, where he completed a course in machining.

Everything that interested Jerry was adopted and executed at a professional level. As a machinist, he built beautiful models of trains, tractors, steamboats, civil war cannons, and even a hay press, all of which could run and do their job on a small scale. He forged knives, and built rifles, as well as constructing things that bolstered his other pastimes, such as a fly-tying vice. Jerry eventually settled in Calgary, AB, where he met Rolly, and the two spent the rest of his life adventuring around Southern Alberta and the Rockies together.

When their daughter Jennifer was old enough to start showing interest in her own hobbies, he adopted those too, driving her to star parties thrown by the astronomy club with his hand made telescope in the back of the truck, and his plethora of ham radios chattering away in the front. Well known in the ham world for his custom-built antennas, his truck was so loaded up with radios that he was often mistaken for a cop - an ice breaker that allowed him access to private land while out taking photos of wildlife at ungodly hours. Traipsing around the backcountry with his bow and arrow, Jerry honed his survival skills, and would have given any of the Alone contestants a run for their money.

His passion for so many things was what brought him to photography, so that he could share his love with the world in an accessible way. Jerry’s work has been featured in many publications, but the best way to enjoy it all in one place is to visit his website: www.jerryclement.ca Jerry was also a fantastic storyteller, and kept a blog of his adventures over the past fifteen years at: ve6ab.blogspot.com.

Jerry is survived by his loving Wife, and favorite cook, Rolly Clement of Calgary, AB; his daughter Jennifer Clement of Vancouver, BC; his sister Sonia Clement (Michael Fraser) of Vancouver, BC; his nieces Tegan Quin, Sara Quin, Mackenzie Bromstad, Talia Bromstad, and Chelsea Bromstad; and his great aunt Helene Clement. He was predeceased by his mother, Rita Clement; father, Luke Clement; and sister, Julie Bromstad.

Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Jerry’s family here.
