Obituary of Raymond Emeric Quesnel

July 30, 1952 - Ottawa, Ontario
August 10, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Raymond Emeric Quesnel was born in Ottawa on July 30, 1952, and passed away in Calgary on August 10, 2023.

He is very much missed by his loving wife of 25 years, Alicia (nee Kunetzki), his precious daughter, Olivia, his creative and talented grandchildren, Eva and Leo, his dearest sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Gary Bonhomme, his best friend, Rowland Harrison, and many more nieces, nephews and in-laws to name.

Ray was an accomplished lawyer with a brilliant legal mind. For more than forty years he practiced corporate-commercial and energy law, in both industry and government settings. He advised Canadian and international energy companies on domestic and international world class energy projects, several of them the largest and most significant projects of their time. He was a key advisor to the Governments of Canada, British Columbia and Nova Scotia on offshore energy policy and legislation and appeared as a witness before legislative committees of the House of Commons.

Outside of his professional endeavours, Ray had a passion for reading, baking and watching tennis and baseball. He studied history through the eyes and experiences captured in the biographies of others. His apple and pecan pies were legendary, and (to his family and friends) may well have exceeded even his accomplishments in law. He spent many hours on set with Federer and Nadal and in the park with Vlady Jr.  Ray was gifted with a unique ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He was adept and skilled as a writer and conversationalist. A story-teller with a sharp wit and wicked sense of humour, he made people laugh. But most of all, he loved and he is loved.

At Ray's request, there will be no formal service. If you remember him in passing from time to time and recollect a story or two with a smile, he will be happy.

Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Ray’s family here.

In living memory of Raymond Quesnel, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
