Obituary of John Charles McSweeney

September 8, 1942 - August 19, 2023

John McSweeney, beloved husband of  Margaret McSweeney  (nee Mansell), of Vernon, BC and most recently Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at the age of 80 years.

John was born in Marpole, Vancouver, BC on September 8, 1942. He grew up in Richmond, BC where he met his beloved wife Margaret, in which they were married in 1965.

John started his career as a heavy-duty mechanic with Finning Tractor. He discovered his passion for flying and soon become an Air Canada pilot. After 29 years, John retired as a B767 Captain in 2002.

Besides his loving wife Margaret, John is survived by three Children, Daniel (Wendy), Robert (Brenda), and Sherry (Brian); six grandchildren, Randall (Allie), Scott (Sarah), Julie (Kevin), Jordan (Brittany), Breanna (Austin), and Liam (Emma) as well as five great-grand dogs, Milo (Houdini), Indie, Sasha, Scout, and Lilly, and one whimsical cat named Karma.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church (1414 Shawnessy Boulevard S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, August 25, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. McSweeney’s Funeral Mass streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with John’s family here.
