Robert (Rob) Pearce

Obituary of Robert (Rob) Pearce

1958 - 2023

Rob Pearce passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, in Calgary, AB at the age of 65 years. Born to Arthur and Dorothy (nee McLaughlin) Pearce in Yellowknife, NWT, he grew up in Delta, BC, along with his sisters, Kathleen, Nancy and Susan.

Rob’s devotion to his family was unwavering. He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 35 years, Carolyn Guichon; his treasured children, Madeline, Robert, and Gabrielle; his sisters, Kathie Mahler and Susan (Ross) King; brothers-in-law, Greg (Susan) Guichon, Brian (Donna) Guichon and Alain Verbeke; and sisters-in-law, Anne Guichon and Julie Guichon (Alain); as well as many nephews and nieces. Rob was predeceased by his parents, sister Nancy, daughter Alana, and brother-in-law Ralph Mahler. He will be remembered as a caring brother, wonderful husband, model father and great friend.

Rob attended UBC where he attained a BSc in Engineering. As a young engineer he worked on mining projects and rail tunnels for the CPR in the Rocky Mountains. He later pursued an MBA at the University of Calgary, where he met Carolyn. Thereafter, Rob became known as an exceptionally skilled senior executive in the energy industry. He worked for Wood Gundy, PanCanadian Petroleum, CP Limited, Harvest Energy and Sunshine Oilsands. Rob was also a co-founder and the founding president of the Northwest Refinery. He served on many public and private company Boards and volunteered his expertise to many not-for-profit organizations.

Just as active in semi-retirement, Rob made each day count, wholeheartedly pursuing his passions: reading, mentoring new businesses, enjoying golf, hiking, hockey, skiing, and other athletic pursuits. What he treasured most of all was spending time with his cherished family and many friends, sharing his love for learning, exploration, and the outdoors. Just last summer he guided his kids along the West Coast Trail.

Rob was admired for his brilliant mind, quick wit, kindness, patience, and his thoughtful deliberations on so many subjects. He was a gentleman, recognized for his graciousness and trustworthiness. Rob had a great ability to analyze complex information and to solve difficult problems. He was resolute in standing up for what he believed, approaching the world as both an engineer and an avid knowledge seeker, viewing every experience as an opportunity to expand his horizons. Yet for all his many accomplishments, Rob was a very humble person who never sought attention or acclaim.

The loss of Rob leaves a void that cannot be filled, and he will be dearly missed. Rob’s influence, both through his unwavering love for his family and his steadfast commitment to living a life of character, leaves a rich and meaningful legacy of deeds done with love, innate decency, duty and honour. That legacy will continue to encourage and inspire those who knew and loved him.
