Kenneth Fischer

Obituary of Kenneth Edward Fischer

June 4, 1935 - Viking, Alberta

November 3, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Kenneth “Ken” Fischer, of Calgary, AB, peacefully passed away, due to Congestive Heart Failure and Lymphoma, on the morning of Friday, November 3, 2023, at the age of 88 years.

Ken was born on June 4, 1935, to George and Marjorie Fischer of Irma, AB. Ken was raised on a farm (Irma), enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy (1958-1969) becoming a Naval Officer, and was educated at the University of Alberta as a Mechanical Engineer (1960-1964). This combination led him to a successful career as a professional marine engineer where he designed the repair of warships, designed subsea oil wells, supervised the construction of the ice breakers “Terry Fox” and “Kalvik”.

In 1959, Ken met his wife to be Madeleine at his cousin Marjorie’s wedding. They married on Dec 23, 1961, to which they remained faithful until death did them part.

Ken’s hobbies were all competitive whether it was golf, curling or cards. But his real passion was coaching. He believed if you didn’t get it yet, you would with a little more practice, and he was always willing to help. Ken was a teacher when it was studies for school, a coach when it was tryouts for a team, and a competitor when it was time to play. No matter what it was, you gave it all you had and practiced until you got it right.

Ken will be remembered as a good man who spoke little with his tongue, but much with his deeds. He was also a loving husband and attentive father. The world is just a little less without his stalwart example and he will be sorely missed.

Ken is survived by his loving wife, Madeleine, three children, Darrin (Anita) Fischer, Dee (Dean) Butler, and Jill Fischer; and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Gordie (Sherrilee) Fischer, two sisters, Alice Gleeson, and Carol (Ron) Prior; and sisters-in-law, Dixie Fischer and Marian Fischer. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Don Fischer and Robert Fischer; and brother-in-law Kevin Gleeson.

Funeral Services will be held at Southview Alliance Church (20200 Walden Boulevard S.E, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Ken's service streamed live on the day of the service at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82389263317?pwd=V1F1SWhmMUpNcFNpM2FyNWFtUjBHQT09.
