Obituary of Ernest Peter Reimer

Ernest Peter Reimer was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, papa, grandpa, great-grandpa, uncle, and friend. Ernie passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the age of 90 years.

He was the eldest of four children, and was born in Osler, SK., to Peter and Anna Reimer. Ernie grew up in a rural environment during the Depression, which ingrained in him the value of family, hard work, and the importance of a strong community.

His adventures began early; at fifteen, Ernie hitchhiked to Calgary seeking new opportunities. He worked on a farm near Rockyford, before returning to complete his education at Rosthern College. It was in 1952 that Ernie met the love of his life, Adelle. They married less than a year later and started their family in 1955.

Ernie’s life was a tapestry of service, both to his family and his career. He fulfilled a lifelong dream to be a policeman starting with the Calgary Police Service (CPS) in 1954.  Over the years he earned the nickname “Silver Fox”. He worked in various CPS divisions, where his dedication and acumen ultimately led him to the position of Chief of Police in 1984.

Building relationships, thoughtful communication and integrity were prevalent throughout his career. As Chief, he was proud of CPS’ lead role with security during the 1988 Winter Olympics.  After he retired in 1989, he started at Interhome Energy Inc. as the Director of Corporate Security.  In 1990, policing called him back and he was recruited by the City of Regina to fill the position of Chief of Police.  His final retirement was in 1994.

In later years, Ernie volunteered as Co-Chair for the Police Officers and Firefighters Tribute Plaza. It stands as a living memorial at City Hall today. He was also a volunteer driver for the Cancer Society.

After retirement, Ernie and Adelle’s wanderlust and desire to explore the world took them on numerous adventures where they touched almost every continent. They travelled together, with family and close friends.

Family gatherings and celebrations occurred over the years and their home was the gathering place. Ernie was an avid sports fan, had a good sense of humor and enjoyed social events with friends; many from the CPS family.

Ernie is survived by his daughters Brenda (Brian), Beverly and son Brad; grandchildren, Michelle (Neil), Kathy (Jer), David (Jamie), Sean (Amber), Jamie (Chris), Jessica (Devin), and Jason (Morgan); and great grandchildren, Declan, Paisley, Kenzie, Lily, Walter, Addison, Emma, Georgia, Everly, Emerson, Easton, Wyatt, Eliza, and Lydia.

He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Adelle, son Richard, son-in-law Murray, parents Peter and Anna, brothers Archie and Stanley, and his sister Joyce.

Ernie’s legacy is one of love, service, and the joys of a life well-lived. He had an enthusiasm for life and will be profoundly missed, yet forever celebrated in countless cherished memories.

In honor of Ernie’s love for the community, we ask in lieu of flowers you consider donating to a charity of your choice.

“Farewell, our beloved Dad. Your stories, lessons, and love remain with us always.”
