Obituary of Dr. Bruce B. Allan
1957-2023
Dr. Bruce B. Allan, MSc, PhD, MD, FRCS(C) passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 19, 2023 due to a massive stroke, with his family by his side.
Born March 26, 1957 in Edmonton AB, his family moved to Calgary where he attended Henry Wisewood High School. Following graduation, he relocated to Winnipeg to attain his BA in Agriculture. He then continued his studies to complete a PhD in Animal Breeding and Genetics at the University of Alberta. After several years in the animal world, he chose to pursue a career in medicine completing his degree at the University of Calgary. After years of residency, he chose Obstetrics and Gynecology as his speciality. A respected clinical faculty member within the Calgary Zone health community since 1998, he eventually rose to staff surgeon followed by his appointment as Chief of Obstetrics.
He loved and respected women and fully supported their rights regarding health and reproductive issues. The Allan Centre was created with this in mind.
Everyone can truly say that he loved his choice of profession. Jokes were made that he would never retire, never quit working, which held true to the end. He had deep respect for his staff and nurses who worked alongside him. Patient, kind and generous to a fault, he openly shared his vast knowledge and was a true mentor to many in the medical field.
Survived by son Mark (Elana); daughter Leslie (Chris); ex-spouse Jane (best friend and business partner); brother Gord Allan (Sue); sisters, Diane Stewart (Don) and Judy Kealty; nieces and nephews, Gordie, Pam, Tom, Allie (Alex), Meri (Chase), Chad (Clair) and Sarah (Mark). He was predeceased by his parents, Don and Reta Allan and brother-in-law Tim Kealty.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the Emergency Department of the Foothills Hospital and Unit 112 of the Stroke Unit for their professionalism and compassion.
Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Bruce’s family here.
