Obituary of Naomi Buckley Schmaltz

June 17, 1943 - Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

November 30, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Noni Schmaltz of Calgary, AB, Canada returned home to her Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, November 30, 2023 at the age of 80.

Noni was the beloved wife of Terry, cherished mother, and treasured Nana, who adored any child within her orbit. Noni became an “honourary mom” to many, deeply touching the lives of those who were fortunate to know her.  Noni had many talents and pursuits.  She was proud to be a hostess at EXPO 86, a campground host at Fort Worden in Washington State, and an early childhood educator. She worked for BCTEL/TELUS for over 20 years, especially enjoying the challenges of customer service – she never met an unhappy client she couldn’t turn around!  Noni’s wit and sense of humour was a sign of her intellect – always quick with a reply or a counter.  She loved the beauty, humour and complexity of clowns.  A character of incredible integrity, fortitude and grit, she was also incredibly creative.  A talented writer, cartoonist and artist, she also loved any occasion to decorate for the holidays – Christmas most of all.

Noni enjoyed glamping with Terry in their RV all around Canada and the US, especially many trips to the Oregon Coast and T&N's big adventure to the Grand Canyon. Disneyland and Hawaii were also favourite destinations. She was a member of Job's Daughters & Eastern Star and volunteered with Girl Guides of Canada, Wood’s Homes and the Canadian SIDS Foundation.

Noni is survived by her husband Terry, son TJ (Sanam Bakhtiar) Schmaltz of Vancouver; and daughter Heidi (Rock Gonsalves) Schmaltz of Calgary; grandchildren, Tobiyah Gonsalves, Isaiah Gonsalves, and Benjamin Schmaltz. She is also survived by her sister Carole Furness of Seattle as well as many nieces and nephews. Noni was predeceased by her son Tobias Schmaltz, and granddaughter Briella Gonsalves.

Special thanks to all the doctors and nurses, especially Dr Terrence McDonald, the Complex Care Hub (SHC & RGH) and the Acute Geriatrics Units for their excellent care and compassion.
