Obituary of Janet Louise Westman

Janet Westman of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024, at the age of 60 years. With limited time to digest the terminal diagnosis, with family by her side, we said goodbye to our little sister.

August 22, 2023, was Janet’s sixtieth birthday celebration in her beloved Okanagan, surrounded by family. 

Janet had the privilege to choose how she wanted to spend her final months: with her family and friends. Time was ticking, so she made a plan:

Her brother Jay and sister Diana whisked her away to Las Vegas for some bonding, planning and mischief. Janet’s wish to finally clean out the casino came true. Flying with her friends on a flight to Amersterdam, with her daughter Shelby in tow, because why not!

Focusing on keeping her beloved fur-babies, Jersey and Cooper together, they were rehomed with her loving best friend Julie.

Helping her sister navigate a major surgery and sharing her extremely handsome Latino Doctor. All her Mexican friends were there to help, entertain and support in any way they could.

On January 20, a special and unique party was held. A gathering of all Janet’s different “gangs.” She had school gangs, golf gangs, off-roading gangs and of course, her famous Mexico gang. The list goes on and on.

Laughter, eating, dancing and tomfoolery was had by all her friend and family gangs, who flew from all around North America to be with her. A true indicator of what a special person and impact she has had in our lives.

Her sense of humour and laidback advice will be missed by all, most of all, by Shelby, her daughter. Shelby came into her life at the age of two and stole her heart and ours. In addition to her daughter, she has five nieces and nephews and six grandnieces and nephews. Auntie Janet/Mom, was the “cool” one. The type of auntie you call at 2:00 a.m. no matter what. The keeper of the secrets. Their adoration of her was ever so evident in their gestures of time and support.

Janet was asked a few years ago “if you were a dog what kind dog would you be?” Without hesitation, Janet immediately said Golden Retriever. Yup! That describes her absolutely perfect! Playful, gentle and young at heart. Being the youngest in the family, her brother Jay and sister Diana will forever miss their own special bond and rhythm, as only these brother and sisters can have. Janet Westman, age 60 years young, preceded by Beverly (2003) and Alvin Westman (2008).
