Obituary of Janice Rose Doore

February 21, 1962 – Siksika Nation, Alberta

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother, Janice Rose Doore, Mii’na’ki (Berry Woman). Our dear Janice passed away on December 21, 2023, at the Foothills Medical Centre at the age of 61 years old. She was born at the Blackfoot Hospital on February 21, 1962, and resided on the Siksika Nation.

Janice had many accomplishments throughout her lifetime. In her younger years, she was athletic and a tom-boy who played various sports, such as hockey, basketball, broomball, and baseball. Horseback riding in Shouldice was also a favorite past time of hers. She always spoke of the times she would play ground hockey and she’d have to be the goalie for her brothers and cousins. Janice was always happy to support her family and community in any sport, especially her favorite sport, hockey. She loved cheering on her son, grandson, brothers, various nephews, and nieces throughout the years.

Planning, fundraising, and organizing was her specialty and she always did her best. Her skills, experience, and ambition fueled her to acquire her Social Work Diploma at Mount Royal College. Janice then went on to obtain many more achievements academically and professionally in her life. She held various job positions and roles on and off reserve. Janice also served on numerous Siksika Boards. A few highlights of her career include serving three terms as council for Siksika Nation and overseeing the Siksika Crisis Response team as Team Lead for numerous years. She was always adamant about encouraging our youth to go further and pushing awareness on bullying, she was a vital component in the development and selection of the SN7 Youth Group.  Her final group, the Kimaapipitsin (Caring, Kindness) Women’s Program, made her very proud as well. She held all her groups in high regard and took pride in working with each and every participant.

Janice had a kind, loving heart and generous spirit. She took care of everybody before herself. Her priority was always her family. She’d always call and check up on everyone. A phone conversation with “Jan” would last over an hour at times, but in her voice, you would feel her genuine love and concern. She traditionally adopted many whom she took as her own children and siblings. She was very close with her nieces and nephews, and always looked out for them.

Amongst her many endeavors and obligations, Janice cherished family get-togethers and family trips. She always spoke of her trip to New Zealand for the W.I.P.C.E (World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education).

Janice always had a big heart for animals, she especially adored her dogs, Max, Bex, Jax, Kobe and Lucky. She would always show love towards all dogs who would stop by her house or who would cross her path. She always had snacks and water to offer.

Janice was a devout Christian, her devotion to her faith and spirituality was very important to her and she supported various ministries.

Janice leaves behind her precious son Keevin, granddaughter Kiana, and special grandson Breydan.  Brothers, Michael Right Hand, Merlon (Stacey), Keon, and Lee Eagle Rib. Uncle Bernard St. Goddard and aunties Donna Jean Raw Eater, Yvonne, Elizabeth, Leslie, and Justine Stimson. She cherished all of her nieces and nephews as her own. Janice also leaves behind the following extended family relatives: Doore, Big Snake, Breaker, Stimson, Axe, Weasel Child, Crane, Three Suns, Raw Eater, Brass, Running Rabbit, Yellow Old Woman, Medicine Shield, Crane Bear, St Goddard, Rides at the Door, Long Time Sleeping, Stone, Back Fat, Bull Bear, and Drunken Chief.

She was predeceased by her parents Fred and Ruby Doore, sisters Lorretta and Charlene, brother Karl, niece Tara Standing Alone and her common-law partner Burton Blackhorse.

A special thank you to the handful of healthcare workers at the Foothills Medical Centre ICU-A. We would also like to thank all family and friends who offered their words of encouragement, kindness, prayers, and support during the loss of our precious Janice.

Wake Services will be held at the Gordon Piik’sapi Yellow Fly Memorial Arbor (Siksika Nation, AB) on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm for family and 4:00pm to 11:00pm for the public.

Funeral Mass will be held at the Gordon Piik’sapi Yellow Fly Memorial Arbor (Siksika Nation, AB) on Thursday, December 28, 2023, with a Viewing at 10:00 a.m. and Funeral Services to follow at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Services to follow at Crowfoot Cemetery (Siksika Nation, AB) with a Feast to follow at the Gordon Yellowfly Memorial Arbour (Siksika Nation, AB).
