February 12, 1934 – January 3, 2024

Elsie Hazen (nee Srosky), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at the age of 89 years.

Elsie was born in Calgary, Alberta on February 12, 1934, and lived here most of her life, except for a few years living in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario, in the 1960’s and 1970’s. She was a proud Calgarian and a proud Ukrainian who played the mandolin in the Ukrainian Orchestra for a number of years.

She loved the Calgary Stampede and was a volunteer for 30 years. She also volunteered with the Alberta Children’s Hospital for 30 years. She was a lover of Jazz music and would sing and clap along with her favourites right until the end.

Elsie is survived by her daughter, Valerie (Peter) Nielsen of Calgary; her son, Tyler Hazen of Sidney, BC; and grandsons, Zachary and Quinn Hazen, both of Calgary. Elsie was predeceased by her father, Harry Srosky, her mother Annie Chuwick, and her step-father, Nick Chuwick.

A private graveside service will be held at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Elsie’s family here.

When I get where I’m going
On the far side of the sky
The first thing that I’m gonna do
Is spread my wings and fly
I’m gonna land beside a lion
And run my fingers through his mane
Or I might find out what it’s like
To ride a drop of rain

Yeah, when I get where I’m going
There’ll be only happy tears
I will shed the sins and struggles
I have carried all these years
And I’ll leave my heart wide open
I will love and have no fear
Yeah, when I get where I’m going
Don’t cry for me down here

In living memory of Elsie Hazen, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
