Bernard Martens

Obituary of Bernard Martens

April 16, 1935 – Wymark, Saskatchewan

January 26, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Bernard Martens passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, January 26, 2024.

He is predeceased by his parents Aganetha and John G Martens; and siblings Sarah “Sally” (Jake), Frank (Cathy), Annie (Zene), and his stepsiblings. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Anne, sons Gerald (Maria) and Aaron (Diana); grandchildren Kassi (David), Keenan (Sarah), and Zachary; as well as his great-grandson, Hugo.

Bernard was born in Wymark, SK, and completed his high school education there. He moved to Calgary shortly after high school and joined the accounting firm, Devonshire Monroe, where he completed his Chartered Accounting diploma in 1960. He also married Anne that same year (it was a good year!). He was an avid fan of the Calgary Stampeders and had season tickets for at least two decades, and instantly became a big Flames fan as soon as the team came to the city. He was also a member of the Inglewood Golf and Country Club for many years.  Both of those passions eventually took a bit of a backseat to his greatest passion - his wife and children.  Later in life, he and Anne enjoyed spending two weeks in their timeshare condo on the 6th hole on the Fairmont Mountainside golf course.

He loved his accounting so much that he worked until his late 70’s, and even started embarking upon the challenging field of business valuation work in his 60’s. He was always up on the news and would willingly and eagerly debate the latest political issues and current events.  Bernard had an incredibly artistic side, and in addition to his own endeavors, he appreciated such famous artists including the Group of Seven artists, Allen Sapp, and Van Gogh.  He loved his music and his diverse tastes ranged from Mozart and Beethoven to John Denver and K.D. Lang, and almost everything in between.
