Obituary of Thomas Craig Slimmon
April 30, 1942 – Weyburn, Saskatchewan
February 1, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Tom Slimmon, beloved husband of Mary Slimmon (nee Thiessen), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at the age of 81 years.
Tom was born in Weyburn, SK on April 30, 1942, and grew up in Killam, AB. Tom attended the University of Alberta, where he excelled and graduated with a degree in Engineering.
It was in Edmonton that Tom met the love of his life, Mary. They met at a party hosted by Mary and her roommates. They realized that they did not have a corkscrew and Tom chose Mary to go with him to find one. Their romance blossomed and they married in 1967. They moved to Sault Ste. Marie after Mary graduated, then settled in Calgary a year later and started their family. Tom was a hard worker, but his main focus was always his family. There were many family vacations and trips that built a lifetime of memories. He was always there for his children and grandchildren and loved spending time with them all. Upon retirement, Tom and Mary would travel a great deal all over the world and enjoyed a fantastic life together.
Tom was a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) and spent many years on the board of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). Tom built a great career and won many awards as a metallurgical engineer. Tom accomplished much throughout his life and was particularly proud of his family, his career, and his amazing dad jokes.
Tom’s contributions to metallurgical engineering are immeasurable. He has mentored many great engineers and travelled the world auditing pipeline and valve companies to ensure world-class safety and quality for pipelines around the globe. He brought his lovely wife Mary on many trips, and they built long-lasting friendships with everyone they met. Tom also took his son Jeff on a special trip to Thailand and his son Steve on a special trip to Iqaluit.
Tom’s final months were spent battling metastatic prostate cancer, while residing in the Providence Care Centre in Calgary. He made friends quickly there with fellow residents and staff. Tom was a man who would brighten everyone’s day and left a lasting impression upon them.
Besides his loving wife Mary (Thiessen) Slimmon, Tom is survived by his two sons, Jeff (Patsy Casselman) and Steve (Gina) Slimmon, and his six grandchildren, Alyssa Lalonde, Natalie Slimmon, Katherine Davidson, Tenzin Slimmon, Raya Slimmon, and Anjali Slimmon. Tom is also survived by his sister Dianne Bownes, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Tom was predeceased by his parents, his brother Jack Slimmon, his daughter Sheryl (Slimmon) Davidson, son-in-law Kris Davidson, granddaughter Lauren Davidson, as well as other family and friends.
