Obituary of Susan Anne Barnfield

July 24, 1946 – Cheltenham, England

February 8, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Susan Barnfield (née Shaw) was born in the town of Cheltenham, England. On Thursday, February 8, 2024, at the age of 77 years, she departed peacefully, surrounded by love during her brief stay at Rosedale Hospice in Calgary.

As the eldest among five sisters, Sue embraced the roles of both a secondary and often primary maternal figure for her younger siblings. Later in life, she became known as Auntie Sue - a beacon of care and stability for numerous nieces and nephews spanning across both England and Canada.

In the vibrant 1970s, Sue embarked on a journey to Canada, landing in the bustling city of Calgary, where she reunited with her mother Joyce, sister Heather, and a host of cherished nieces and nephews. Auntie Sue's weekends were dedicated to creating delightful memories for her extended family, whether through trips to the zoo, matinée movies, visits to the neighbourhood park, or their first Stampeders football game. Saturday mornings became synonymous with the aroma of Sue's renowned crepes, adorned with sugar and lemon juice - a family favorite that brightened the childhood weekends and summers of her nieces and nephews. Even during challenging times, Auntie Sue ensured the children experienced the simple joys that form lasting childhood memories.

In Calgary, Sue contributed to the community both professionally and personally, in retail, accounting, and even managing an ice cream shop in the picturesque Banff. Throughout her senior years, she maintained an active presence in her community association and cultivated a garden brimming with tomatoes in her backyard. Sue's warmth extended to her neighbors, who will miss her friendly spirit on the block. Her compassion for animals, particularly cats, shone brightly throughout her life as she provided a haven for several stray cats in need of love and care.

Sue, fondly known as everyone's auntie, embodied love and care wherever she went, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of both children and animals. She will be remembered for her sharp memory, practical nature, love for tea and toast, and above all, her unwavering affection and dedication to the animals and children in her life.

A private family ceremony will be held to celebrate Sue's remarkable life.
