Obituary of Douglas Stephen Bartsch

December 17, 1949 – Trail, British Columbia

February 23, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dad, Douglas Stephen Bartsch. He passed away peacefully on Friday, February 23, 2024, at the age of 74 years, after a brief battle with cancer. 

Doug was the first of ten children to John and Julia Bartsch. He was raised in the nearby town of Rossland, BC. After graduating from the University of British Columbia, Doug had a long and successful career working as a Geophysicist in Calgary where he also met his wife, Brenda. They were married in May of 1975 and had two children, David and Lori. 

Doug had many hobbies and interests. He was an accomplished fly fisherman. He enjoyed building his own rods and custom lures and flies. Doug was a perpetual do-it-yourselfer and often did all home renovation projects successfully on his own. He was an avid reader, reading books on a variety of subjects so he could continue to learn and challenge himself (Geology, Astronomy, Physics, and Biology). Another one of his favourite pastimes was riding his bike in Fish Creek Provincial Park with his dog Bella. He made several great friends and was well-known to all who lived in his community of Canyon Meadows (42 years). Doug enjoyed going camping and hiking with his children and grandchildren.

Doug was preceded in death by his wife Brenda, parents, John and Julia; brother Terry, and his dog Bailey. 

Doug is survived by his son David Bartsch (Raven Roche), daughter Lori Essay (Don), grandchildren, Sookie and Juniper Essay; as well as his siblings, Gary (Sandi), Lynne (Dave), Donnie (Shera), Judy, Susan (Simon), Diane (Wayne), Pat, and Mike.

We will miss you always Dad! 

As per Doug’s wishes, no services will be held.
