Condolences
Dear Rita & Family, I am soooo sorry to hear of Doug's passing. I heard of such through a dear friend Anne Milewicz from Edmonton who like myself was on the UFCW executive and Safeway negotiating committee for years, with Doug as our leader in the late 80's and early 90's. Doug was very passionate about his work, but we all heard many a story of his family he so loved. Memories of Doug are plenty, but the strength that he encouraged us to have as individuals will continue to be a part of me forever,
Love and prayers,
Gloria Fougere
Nova Scotia
Our deepest condolences to the O'Halloran family.
We were very sorry to hear of Doug's passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts as you grieve this loss.
Rest in Peace Doug.
From everyone at the Unifor Edmonton office.
I was privilege to have met Doug at the UFCW office and a conference and really felt pride to have a strong person to stand up for the working people of Alberta. He will be missed, but has taught us that we need to stay strong and united, to be half the person Doug was. We need to take over as Doug's voice to make sure Doug's voice lives on. I will miss Doug terribly , but hope to make him proud for standing up for my fellow workers, just like he had for his precious moments he gave to the UFCW.
To Doug's family my deepest condolences, he was truly a great man and will be missed, by everyone that had the honour of knowing him.
Douglas put more life into his 66 years than most of us could hope for in a 100, and he did so in many profound ways. At work he elevated and changed the lives of both workers and workplaces. Douglas brought balance to places of work, where businesses that had the benefit of operating in one of the worlds most fortunate countries, could not self regulate themselves to provide basic human working conditions for their own, and he did so in words, deeds, and body. While many will know him for his work, perhaps the greatest achievement was in the family that he built with Rita. A family that stretched from coast to coast, created generations of bright, thoughtful, and wonderful people, and was deep in joy for those fortunate to be within it. Douglas showed us what it means to be a great human. Our world will be less without him, but it is also better as a result of him.
I feel truly honoured to have met Doug, unfortunately only in the last months of his life, and under difficult circumstances. Doug handled his health challenges with grace, dignity, and remained solution-focussed and brave throughout. He demonstrated compassion for his care-givers, even when care was not ideal. He enriched my life, being one of those rare patients who doesn't just take from their physician, but gave of himself, without question or expectations, to me, in return. I shall not forget him. The stream of family & friends in and out of his hospital room was unprecedented! It was great to see how much quality of living Doug could pack into every day; he is an example to follow! Especially after witnessing the beautiful tributes to him yesterday at his funeral, I know for sure what I previously suspected, that I missed out on really knowing a great man. I extend my condolences especially to Kara, Chris, Rita, and all the four grandsons, but also to all who knew him.
With warmest regards, M Young MD.
Doug we will miss you as the great leader of our UFCW401!!! We will also miss you as a caring leader who took a personal interest in the lives of individual members, and who did everything he could to better the lives of every member of this local!!! I want to thank you for devoting your life to helping working people in this province!!! Doug, you will be missed, but we will carry on the fight that you inspired us to engage in!!!
Doug, you were the role model for what a great Trade Unionist is supposed to be. When I needed help in the union movement or in the NDP, you were the one that I felt could and would help.
You inspired me and others to join in with your workers who were on strike. Picket lines were sensitive to all who walked the line yet you were the first to get on it and show your support not only for your members but for others.
I will miss seeing your smile and feeling your kindness.
All the best to your family, your Union, and all your many friends.
I witnessed Doug's steadfastness in his advocacy for working people who needed championing while observing him being a keen student of the world around us. And, in doing so, he improved the lives of so many.
From the first moment I met Doug about 23 years ago, he left an impression...generous of spirit, a sense of humour, and more than a commitment to a better tomorrow - visibly resolute in his fight for fairness for the downtrodden, for the forgotten, for the unseen, and for anyone needing an outreached hand to help another in need.
Doug was there for me when my son Farrell died. He spoke at Farrell's celebration of life and since then Doug often expressed his support and faith.
To Rita and her family, as Doug and I shared about my family's loss of Farrell, faith, one-day-at-a-time, and embrace the good that surrounds you, though that is often more difficult to see through the pain and grief.
I told Doug I loved him when I last saw him in the hospital in early August. I am richer for having him in my life.
Terry

My condolence to Rita and family. I had the pleasure to work with Doug over many yeas as a postal worker and former president of the EDLC. We may not have seen eye to eye at times but one thing I can assure you he had the workers interest first and far most. His obituary tells you exactly who Doug was as a person and friend. The labour movement has lost a true leader and freind.
To Reta, Kara, Christopher and family. From Barry Budgell and kids we want to send our deepest condolences to you and your family. Doug was an amazing person and I am glad that I had the great honour of knowing him and am glad that I got to introduce him to my family. I have many fond memories of Doug from all the Union golf tournaments and Christmas parties. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of grief.
Rita,
I am so sorry for your loss. Thinking of you and your family at this very difficult time. Blessings on you and yours.

Dear Rita and family, my sincere condolences in the loss of Doug. I knew him for so many years. He accomplished so much for the workers through his tireless efforts and will be missed by all. You can be proud of all he did; he was a wonderful man. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
As your time on this earth
Has come to an end
Your spirit remains
Our brother, Our friend
The battle you started
Still remains strong
All workers united
To right all the wrongs
Your presence still felt
In that last hour
As we walk out that door
Feeling our power
The picket line grows
Bit by bit
When I hear you yell
The company is full of sh*t
Many stories told of you
From near and far
Most ending up
With you in a cop car
You were never afraid
To fight a just fight
The companies learned
Your barks as bad as your bite
Your legacy lives on
In the hearts of your members
All you have taught us
Will be remembered
Thankyou Doug O'Halloran
Our brother, Our friend
RIP

Chris I am so sorry for your loss. Chris, what I knew about what kind of man your father was, changed the weekend of the Kananaskis conference some years ago. Up to that point in time, I knew you father was hard at work bettering the lives of for us members. During that conference it was made known to the members in attendance, that his brother had passed. Your father did not leave until he had full filled his part of that conference. It was while, on my way home afterwards that I realized the full extent of your father's dedication to his membership. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time.

I recall meeting Doug several times at the Superstore where I worked and during the strike. He always made time to say hello to the staff and give assistance if needed. Blessings to you all during this challenging time.
Me and my mother met Doug through the local as they supported us and the workers during the lockout at Old Dutch Foods, and never a finer man could I have hoped to have fighting alongside us. He was always a joy to be around and lightened the mood with a smile or a joke. We are so sorry for your loss.
