Obituary of Francisco Lourenco Silva

June 6, 1927 – Lajes Terceira, Azores, Portugal

May 9, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Francisco Silva passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Thursday, May 9, 2024.

Francisco was predeceased in 2016 by his wife of 63 years, Maria Lurdes, and his son Frank in 2020. He is lovingly remembered by his family, Lucia McIntyre (Allan), Joe Silva (Patricia), and Rita Da Silva, all of Calgary, AB; grandchildren, Michael of Calgary, Jamie (Kim) of Vancouver, BC, Sean (Marianne) of Vienna, Austria, Cristina (Daniel) of Calgary, Jessica (Ryan) of Whitecourt, AB, and Joey (Tessa) of Edmonton, AB; and great-grandchildren, Henry and Isaac McIntyre of Vancouver, Mia King of Calgary, and Kilian and Leonard McIntyre of Vienna, Austria. He is survived by many nephews and nieces in Canada, the United States, and Portugal.

Francisco was a hardworking, generous, and proud man who was devoted to his family, friends, and faith. In their retirement, Francisco and Maria Lurdes made frequent trips to Lajes, where they enjoyed living in the house he built, participating in festas, and visiting family and friends. Francisco was Maria Lurdes devoted caregiver in the final years of her life.

Francisco was an active member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish. He contributed to the building of the church, sang in the church choir, and participated in Parish events. He was a good friend to many parishioners.

Francisco worked as a construction labourer. He was valued and trusted by his employers. His farming background transferred easily from Terceira to his garden in Calgary. He looked forward to the spring planting and growing a good crop of "nabos".

Francisco received support from many devoted caregivers in his final years and days. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Eliane Batista and family, CBI Homecare and Services, the Palliative Homecare team, the Peter Lougheed Hospital staff (Complex Chronic Disease Management Clinic, Unit 49, and Emergency Dept.), the Intercare Chinook Hospice staff, and Fr. Fábio Vieira de Souza.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church (4747 – 30th Street S.E., Calgary, AB) on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church (4747 – 30th Street S.E., Calgary, AB) on Monday, May 13, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
