Obituary of Kimberley Marie Nix

August 11, 1992 – Pugwash, Nova Scotia

May 8, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with broken hearts, that we announce the passing of Kimberley Marie Nix. She passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at the young age of 31 years, in the loving presence of her spouse and family.

Kimberley grew up in the close-knit community of Pugwash, NS. From childhood on, Kim never shied away from hard work. She readily volunteered for all activities, for which she had time and was happy to bring her community together for social events and celebrations of special moments. She always had a passion for baking and loved to share her creations with friends and family. Interested in the arts, you could find Kim singing along to her favourite songs and attending musicals and concerts. She loved taking pictures and making videos of her favourite experiences, including travel. She always treasured her visits to Pugwash and her second home in Cape Breton.

Always dreaming of becoming a doctor, she moved to Hamilton, to attend McMaster University for a Bachelor of Health Sciences. She was then accepted into medical school at Dalhousie University in Halifax, where she met the love of her life, Michael MacIsaac. They moved together to Calgary for Kim to complete her residency and begin her Master's in Epidemiology. Kim’s warm and compassionate personality attracted amazing people. As she pursued her dream, she built and nurtured a community of long-lasting friendships.

Over the next three years, she continued to live her life to the fullest and was a beacon of hope and positivity to her community as she battled her rare sarcoma with grace and dignity. Always looking to help others, she shared her personal experience and spread awareness for sarcoma cancer through social media and fundraising for cancer research.

Kim taught us to enjoy the small things in life, to have courage in the face of hardship, and to always show compassion and empathy. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her spouse and soulmate, Michael MacIsaac, her parents, Greg and Alvina, grandmother Joyce Nix (Tom), brother Jarred (Kim), niece Madelyn, and her fur babies, Fleur and Gourd (cats), and Pinot (dog).

The family will be forever grateful to her medical team who guided her through every step of her sarcoma journey. A special thanks to the oncology team at the Tom Baker Cancer Center, her palliative care team, as well as her many friends and colleagues who provided a range of incredible support. The additional time we had with her because of this amazing care has been an incredible gift, as each day spent with Kimberley was cherished.

Her hope for us all is that we find joy in the small things and beauty in the day-to-day moments. A bright light for so many, her legacy will continue for many years to come.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Kim’s wish was to continue to raise awareness for sarcoma cancer. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Own Cancer,  Dr. Kimberley Nix's Sarcoma Research Fundraiser, or to a legacy scholarship in honour of her name at the University of Calgary, Memorial Award to honour Dr. Kimberley Nix.
