Obituary of David Edward Todd

May 21, 1945 – Hutton Magna, Yorkshire, England

June 8, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

David “Dave” Todd, beloved husband of Anna Kae McIvor-Todd, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at the age of 79 years.

Dave grew up in Yorkshire and County Durham as the eldest of a family of five in the farming community and village of Middleton St. George. He trained and worked as a motor mechanic in Darlington until he immigrated to Calgary, Canada, in 1969. Dave was a “car guy”. He worked in the automotive industry as a mechanic, a heavy-duty mechanic (in the Arctic), an owner of an automotive service shop, and for many years in various roles in automotive service management. Dave was a strong proponent of the apprenticeship model of education and served for many years on SAIT’s Polytechnic Automotive Industry advisory committee. On occasion, he also taught automotive general interest courses. He often had different projects on the go. The two he was most proud of were his complete re-builds of a 1961 Jaguar E-Type and a 1962 Jaguar Mark II.

Dave loved to travel. He and Anna Kae were fortunate to be able to travel widely throughout Canada and Great Britain. They also had some wonderful experiences in Africa and had some of their favourite holidays in Egypt, Japan, New Zealand, and Iceland.

Dave loved the mountains and enjoyed skiing. He thought that the best way to “shorten” a Canadian winter was to go skiing – which he did for over 35 years. He also loved golf. He liked nothing better than to go golfing on a Sunday in and around Calgary with his favourite golf buddies.

Family and friends were very important to Dave, and he enjoyed gardening and cooking. His breakfasts were delicious and the many dinners he made for his family for special occasions were the source of many happy memories, only made better when he could contribute something from his garden to the menu.

Dave is survived by his loving wife Anna Kae, his two sons, Neville Stuart (Charlene) and Simon James; and his granddaughter Zoe (Reed). He is also survived by his two brothers, Richard and Geoffrey (Sandra); and one sister Shirley (John), all of England, as well as by many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends in Canada and abroad.

He was predeceased by his parents, Stephen William Todd and Margaret “Peggy” Todd (nee Cummins); and by his brother Joseph “Joe”, all of Middleton St. George, England.
