Gertrud Kantwerg

Obituary of Gertrud Kantwerg

March 8, 1925 – Mannheim, Germany

June 26, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Gertrud Kantwerg, the beloved wife of Erwin Kantwerg of Hamilton, ON, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at the age of 99 years.

Gertrud was born in Mannheim, Germany, on March 8, 1925, and married the love of her life, Erwin Kantwerg, in 1949. Three years later, they courageously immigrated to Canada, hoping for a better life.

Their life in Canada was filled with many exciting adventures as a family, where they built unforgettable memories. They built their first home by hand at Albion Falls in Hamilton, then their cottage on Pickerel Lake in the Muskoka district after moving to Buchanan Park. One of grandson Jason’s fondest memories of his Oma and Opa includes spending perfect summer evenings together in their beautifully kept garden.

Gertrud loved everyone, and they, in turn, loved her deeply. She is remembered fondly for her gentle spirit. Always loving, she enjoyed cooking and baking the most amazing cakes.

Her life was rich. She had many wonderful friends and enjoyed travel, entertaining, and vacations to the cottage.

Even in the end, she had an undying love for her Aunt Tina, who treated Gertrud like her own daughter after her birth mother, Elizabeth Gundrum (sister to Tina), passed when Gertrud was only six years old.

Gertrud is survived by her sister Margret, son Erwin Kantwerg, daughter-in-law Paula Grayton, grandchildren Rebecca and Jason; and nephew Volker Zahn.

She is joining her beloved husband of 62 years at the Mount Hamilton Cemetery.

Mom, you will live in my heart forever.
