Obituary of Alfred Egert

February 20, 1933 – Rudnik, Poland

June 28, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Alfred Egert, beloved husband of Erika Egert, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2024, at the age of 91 years.

Alfred Egert was born in Rudnik, Poland on February 20, 1933, the son of Anton and Lidia (nee Fandrich) Egert. In May 1939, Anton and Lidia and their five children, including Alfred, immigrated to Canada and settled on a farm near Edberg, AB.

In August 1957, Alfred and Erika were married and celebrated 66 years of marriage in 2023. Following their marriage, Alfred and Erika moved to Edmonton, AB but their heart remained on the farm.  In 1962, they bought their own farm near Edberg where they lived for 11 years. Their only daughter, Marilyn, was born during their time on the farm.

The family moved to Calgary in 1973 where Alfred sold real estate for more than 20 years, retiring in 1995. After retirement, Alfred and Erika were able to travel, making three trips to various European countries, the highlight of which was visiting the small town of Rudnik, Poland where he was born. They also travelled to nine Canadian provinces and various US states.

Alfred was an extremely hard worker all his life. Given all the years on the farm, he was excellent at fixing anything mechanical, whether it was farm machinery, vehicles, or anything around the house. He loved reading his Bible, gardening, and a good bargain. He also loved walking his dog, Bella. He had an affinity for Ford vehicles and his love for the farm was always in his heart.

Alfred was a devoted husband and father and was also close with his extended family. He had twelve brothers and sisters, and the entire Egert clan, which now comprises well over a hundred people, always made an effort to see each other at annual Christmas dinners, weddings, milestone birthdays, and anniversaries.

Alfred was a devout Christian and unwavering in his faith to the very end. After a long illness, he passed away peacefully having been lovingly cared for at the Southwood Hospice for the last 6 weeks of his life.

Alfred will be sadly missed by his wife Erika, daughter Marilyn (Graham), Walt Paterson, brothers, Daniel (Lilly), Ronald (Margaret), Harold (Grace), and Eldon (Shirley); sisters, Jennie Riske, Lilly (Jim) Wright, Edna (Werner) Haag, Helen (Adolf) Pelzer, and Linda (Darrell) Croswell; sister-in-law Esther Egert, and many nieces and nephews.

Alfred was predeceased by his parents, Anton and Lidia Egert; sister Hilda Stebner, brothers, Waldemer, Leonard, and Raymond (Ebenhard); and brothers-in-law, Ervin Stebner, Ray Riske, and Alvin Mauer.

Funeral Services will be held at First Alliance Church (12345 – 40th Street S.E., Calgary, AB) on Monday, July 8, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Church Hall.
