Obituary of Shirley Jean Hunter

July 14, 1933 – Hanna, Alberta

July 4, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Shirley Jean Grover Hunter, beloved mother, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 4, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories.

Born on July 14, 1933, in Hanna, AB, Shirley was the daughter of Mary and Lyle Grover. She spent her early years in Hanna, a small town where she was surrounded by the warmth of her family, including her three brothers, Jim, Don, and Arnold; all of whom predeceased her.

Shirley's journey took her to Calgary at a young age, where her vibrant spirit and warm nature began to shine. She later moved to Saskatoon, where she worked at the Royal Bank, and it was there that she met the love of her life, Murray Hunter, from Strathroy, ON. They were married on February 27, 1960, and together they built a wonderful family life.

In July 1966, Shirley became the mother of who would be her only child, Brian, born in Winnipeg. As a devoted mother, she dedicated herself to raising Brian and creating a nurturing home. The family lived in Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, and then returned to Winnipeg, where they shared countless happy moments, including those with their beloved dog Gus.

Shirley was predeceased by her husband Murray on October 21, 1991, a loss she bore with grace and resilience. After Murray's passing, Shirley moved back to Calgary, where she found comfort in her community and continued to enjoy life to the fullest. She delighted in traveling, with cherished memories of a Hawaiian trip in the 1970s with Murray, and subsequent adventures to the Caribbean, Arizona, Buenos Aires, and Miami, visiting Brian on the last two trips. Her frequent visits to Rocky Mountain House, AB, to see her brother Jim were also very special to her.

A woman of great warmth and generosity, Shirley was known for her open and welcoming nature. She loved to socialize, attend dinner parties, read, and keep abreast of the news. Her genuine concern for others and her heart of gold touched many lives, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Shirley is survived by her beloved son Brian, and a host of nephews, nieces, and great-nephews and nieces. Her memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In the spirit of her favorite quote, "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened”, Shirley's life was a testament to the beauty of embracing every moment with joy and gratitude. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered with love and a smile.

Graveside Services will be held at a later date. Details to follow.
