Joan Bergl

Obituary of Joan Julia Bergl

April 5, 1930 - Regina, Saskatchewan

July 20, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta

Our most cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Joan Julia Bergl, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at the age of 94 years.

Joan was born in Regina, SK, on April 5, 1930. As a young girl, she attended Sacred Heart Academy and enjoyed spending her days practicing her math skills at school and playing the organ at church.

Her giving nature began at an early age. As the oldest child, Joan took on many responsibilities caring for her younger siblings, working part-time jobs to support her family, and lending a helping hand to build and care for their family home.

She met the love of her life in high school, Gordon Bergl. They married on May 18, 1953, beginning their 68-year journey, and were blessed with four beautiful children.

Joan was a compassionate woman and often shared her “heart” through acts of service towards her family and to others. She donated her time and talents to various organizations such as the Samaritan’s Purse, the Girl Guides, The Mustard Seed, and World Vision. Her love of knitting was shared with so many, including baby blankets for each great-grandchild and baby hats to various hospitals across Calgary to the NICU.

Joan’s spirituality wasn’t merely words but was spoken through the actions of her heart and hands.

Joan was extremely proud of her children and their spouses, her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family gatherings were one of her greatest joys and it was important to connect with each of us through conversations and loving gestures. You could always find grandma enjoying The Young and the Restless, playing sudoku, and cheering on the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Calgary Flames. Joan was a tremendous example to her grandchildren, teaching us the value of positivity and perseverance. Her spirit embodied light, love, and kindness that you could feel through her voice. She will forever live in each one of us.

Joan was predeceased by her husband Gordon Bergl, son Jeffrey (Heather) Bergl, grandson Phillip Rondeau, and great-grandchild Leah Boyer. Joan is survived by her daughters Joanne (Ray) Rondeau and Rhonda (Ken) Bertsch; son Timothy (Mian) Bergl, twelve grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren. Joan Bergl will always be cherished, deeply missed, and forever remembered.
