Obituary of Allan Arnold Anthony Velker

Allan “Russ” Velker of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2024, at the age of 87 years.

Russ was born in Calgary on May 17, 1937, and grew up in Beiseker, AB.

He was predeceased by his parents, Adam and Mary Velker; his sister Donna Martinusen, and his wife Cathy. ​​​​ He is survived by his three children, Kelli (Nicola), Tamara, and Russell (Rindi); as well as his four grandchildren, Kallen, Max, Carter and Kathleen.

Russ started his career as a welder at his father’s blacksmith shop “Adam Velker and Son” in Beiseker, and retired from plumbing and heating sales in Calgary, not before co-owning a General Motors car and farm equipment dealership in Vulcan, AB.

To know Russ was to love Russ. Always happy to see anyone, his kindness, integrity, and genuine demeanor were unwavering and admirable, and he was the ultimate unintended comedian.

Russ was very committed to his faith. He was an altar boy, a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, spent many years chaperoning The Blessed Sacrament, and volunteered at the help desk at St. Bonaventure parish.

Russ exemplified the saying, “Do not mistake kindness for weakness.” He played hockey until he was 80, at 85 he recovered from lung surgery like a champion, and consistently demonstrated amazing grace, strength and fortitude until his last moment.

He loved his family and friends, golfing, hockey, curling, travelling to Phoenix and Charlotte, reading, coffee gatherings, happy hour, and home and yard projects that were always meticulous. Above all though, was his love and devotion to Cathy. There is comfort in knowing they are reunited and enjoying Part Two of their love story.

Dad, you are our hero. Thank you for teaching us about character, and to be kind and strong all at once. May your most beautiful and gentle soul rest in peace.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E., Calgary, AB) on Friday, August 23, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall.

Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. Velker’s service streamed live (see link below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted.
