Susan and I share the emotions which accompany the physical absence of Alan, although not anywhere near the degree felt by Mado and his family. We found out about the service too late to attend in person but was touched by the pictures, especially those of him surrounded by his grandchildren. I remember his calm demeanour and knowing smile; almost a snicker. In 1984 Alan dropped by our newly excavated lot in strathcona and, with his keen soil engineering hat on, identified some subsoil layers which had the potential for causing foundation issues. He created a professional report of findings which directed appropriate mitigation to our builder. We still live securely in that house with a firm foundation.
