Obituary of Alan John Hanna

August 25, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta

Alan John Hanna of Calgary, AB, went to be with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, August 25, 2024, at the age of 78 years.

Alan was born on October 17, 1945, to Percival and Hilda Hanna, in Dublin, Ireland. Alan attended Trinity College in Dublin where he studied Civil Engineering, moved to Canada for work, then worked on his Master of Science at the University of Ottawa.

In 1972, when visiting Québec City, Alan met Madeleine, and it was love at first sight. After moving out west for work, they were married in 1974.

He worked as a Professional Engineer in Permafrost Civil Engineering for many years and travelled the world for work and pleasure. Some of his favourite recent trips included travelling to Patagonia, a Panama Canal crossing, and an Antarctic cruise. Alan and Madeleine also spent many winters as snowbirds in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Alan is survived by his wife of 50 years, Madeleine, his daughter and her husband, Suzanne and Calvin Van Hill, with their daughters, May-Lynn and Jasmine; and his son and his wife, Andrew and Christa Hanna, with their sons, Luke, Jacob, and Finn; his sister and her husband, Val and Alan Park, his nephew and his wife Colin and Emma Park, with their children James, Cerys, and Reggie; and niece Gail Park. He also has a large, extended family in Québec. He was preceded in death by his parents, Percival and Hilda Hanna.

A Memorial Service will be held at Okotoks Alliance Church (322183 15 Street E, Okotoks, AB), on Friday, September 6, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Church Hall. Child care will be available to those who need it. 

Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. Hanna's service streamed live (see link below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted.
