Obituary of Gerrit Cornelis Johannes Hos

November 17, 1934 – The Hague, Netherlands

September 4, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Gerrit Hos, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, in Calgary AB. Born in 1934 in The Hague, Netherlands, Gerrit lived a full and vibrant life. He studied Mining Engineering at the Technical University of Delft. Shortly after graduating, he embraced a bold adventure, moving to Canada with his wife, Carla, and their 7-month-old baby son. They settled in Calgary, where Gerrit pursued a successful career in Petroleum Engineering with Gulf (British American) and later at the National Energy Board in Ottawa, returning to Calgary for the last few years of his career where he retired in 1996.

Gerrit had a deep passion for music which he joyfully shared with family and friends, whether playing the recorder in ensembles, impromptu piano concerts for his children and grandchildren, or attending concerts. He also shared his love of the outdoors with his children - enjoying skiing (both downhill and cross-country), sailing, hiking, camping, skating on the canal in Ottawa (where he was often the only one with Dutch speed skates), and many cherished memories at the family cottage on Rideau Lake. After retirement, he continued to be active by playing tennis with friends at the Edgemont Club as well as continuing to speed skate on the Olympic Oval in Calgary.

Gerrit is lovingly remembered by his loving wife of 60 years Carla, his children Bart (Norma), Wiebe, and Wilma (Peter), and his grandchildren Jake, Kate (and their mother Tara), David, and Sophia.
