Obituary of Lloyd Archibald Coates
February 16, 1952 -Regina, Saskatchewan
September 8, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta
We lovingly remember Lloyd Coates of Airdrie, AB who passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at the age of 72 years.
Lloyd was predeceased by his mother Betty, father Norman, and his loving adoptive family, Jim and Momo Pirsak. Lloyd leaves behind his sister and family, Norma and Marlene; son Andy (Heyley, Chelsea, Callie, Chloe, Cassie), daughter Brittney (Marc, Ava), and son Connor (Liv, Stella, Dawson).
Lloyd grew up in Kindersley, SK, and enjoyed everything athletic, taking a shine to hockey and ball as a kid. He knew everyone and was a friend to everyone – he was also known to be a bit mischievous on more than one occasion. The relationships he built here, especially with Jim and Muriel had generational loving impressions on his entire family.
He was a brother to Norma and he lived up to that aggressively. Up until the time of his passing he was still actively looking for ways to get under her skin, but did so in a loving "Lloyd" way.
Lloyd moved to Edmonton and began working with IPL. It was his career here that allowed him to start his family. He raised three kids and supported them in everything they did. He was a passionate coach for many years and volunteered his time wherever he could. He would often head back to work late at night because there was no way he could miss an ice session. He was selfless with his time and cared deeply about those around him.
Eventually Lloyd's career took him to Calgary where he rekindled his relationship with Brenna, the love of his life. He lit up at the thought of her, and although he changed the channel from every skating competition possible, he was amazed by her abilities and love for her sport, and told everyone how incredible she was. Whether it was walking dogs, golfing, or taking trips out to the island, he truly treasured every moment that she was by his side.
When Lloyd wasn't at work or with family he was often working on one of his many unfinished projects. Without any professional sense of mechanical or carpentry prowess, he would always begin with a vision and usually end up with a trip to the emergency room. He was however, quite savvy when it came to detailing vehicles and could he ever get a good fire started.
Lloyd was proud of his kids and the lives they lead today, he told them all the time. He wore all of their worries himself and did all that he could to pass along his small town values to each of them. He cherished his grandkids and was always checking in to see how they were doing and he always had change for a "rink treat" for them whenever he got to watch them playing.
His jovial nature, often off-side jokes, his countless daily phone calls, and helpful nature will be missed. We are fortunate to have had the time with him that we have, there are so many happy memories that will leave us all with loving thoughts when we look back on how he touched each of our lives.
A Celebration of Lloyd’s life will be held privately by the family.
