Obituary of Michael Thomas Smith
April 2, 1974 – September 8, 2024
It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Thomas Smith on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at the age of 50 years.
Michael is survived by his loving wife Tracy, sons, Bohdi and Colby; daughter Brooklyn, mother Linda and her partner Paul; Baba Natalka, brother Randy, his wife Tanis, and their children, Jenna and Nolan; mother-in-law Darlene, father-in-law Stephen, brother-in-law Darcy, his wife Kellie, and their son Vance; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, and his beloved dog Izzy.
Michael was predeceased by his father Raymond (2019), grandfather Walter (2009), and grandparents, George (1979) and Marjorie (2024).
Michael “Mike” was born in Edmonton, AB. As a child, he lived in Edmonton, Swan Hills, AB, and Laramie, WY, before settling in Calgary, AB, with his mother, father, and brother in 1978.
Growing up, Mike loved playing hockey, then turned his focus to music, and it was soon realized by all that he had an amazing vocal talent. Music became his main focus for many years. He was in the Calgary Boys Choir (who knew Mike was a choir boy), and he also spent many years performing with the Youth Singers of Calgary. During this time, he travelled to many places in the world, but more importantly he made life-long friends.
He grew up in the northwest part of Calgary, graduating from St. Francis High School. From there, Mike enrolled in the University of Calgary, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He decided he wasn’t quite done with school and continued on, getting his post graduate diploma in Applied Information Technology.
Mike had a long and successful career in technology. His latest position at Attabotics was an exciting new chapter, which also came with a new title of VP of Technology and Data. Mike was unique in that the connections he built in his professional life mirrored that of his personal life. He was widely respected and liked by so many. His natural leadership created a loyal following of IT professionals who had great confidence in him.
In 1994, Mike met the love of his life, Tracy. They got married in 2002 and weren’t just husband and wife – they were best friends. They had three beautiful children, Bohdi, Colby, and Brooklyn. Mike spent countless hours coaching both boys in lacrosse and hockey and spent many evenings at dance recitals and cheer competitions with Brooklyn. He was a doting father and took immense pride in his children.
He loved spending summers at the lake in Windermere, BC, where he took pleasure in boating, biking, and sitting around the fire. Many nights were spent playing cards and games. He enjoyed spending his winters skiing and going on the famous ski adventures with the ManTrippers. Mike also loved to travel with his family. His most memorable trip was just a few weeks ago in August to Disney World, where he and his family celebrated his 50th birthday along with his best pal Chad and his family.
Mike and Tracy created a home where family and friends were always welcome. Mike loved to cook and entertain. He was always up for a good time; you just never knew when he was going to break out the guitar, accordion, or simply just start up a dance party. Their home holds many memories of Christmas celebrations, birthdays, and game nights filled with so much love and laughter.
“What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.”
