Lorn Howes

Obituary of Lorn Howes

September 2, 1945 - November 15, 2024

It is with tremendous sadness we announce the passing of Lorn Howes, beloved husband of Kathleen Howes, of Calgary, AB, on Friday, November 15, 2024, at the age of 79 years.

Lorn will be lovingly remembered by his wife Kathleen, two sons, Cameron and Chad; stepdaughter Robyn, twin sister Linda (Don) Lindsey, sisters, Alice (Walter) Amyotte, Sharon (Ralph) Ross, and Carolyn Tost; and his sisters-in-law, Debbie (Nonnie) and Sandy (Andy).

Lorn was predeceased by his sister Shirley and her husband Don, and brothers, Nonnie and Andy.

Lorn was born on September 2, 1945, in Calgary, AB, to Fred and Tilly Howes. He grew up in Calgary and graduated from Bowness Composite High School. After high school Lorn worked in Ogden with a sheet metal shop but soon moved on to his favourite job as a Calgary firefighter where he remained until his retirement in 2004.

As a young man, Lorn spent many weekends with his father and brothers on camping and fishing trips to all corners of the province. His dad’s goal was to find the best fishing hole in Alberta. It was during these trips that Lorn developed a love of the outdoors and beauty of the province. Lorn spent a great deal of time in the Rocky Mountain House area and in time bought his own property near his two brothers, Nonnie and Andy. He called his quarter section a “Gentleman’s Farm.” He spent the spring and fall months helping seed and harvest on his brother-in-law and sisters farm at Arrowood, AB.

Lorn had a love of antique cars and did his best to attend car shows whenever possible. He had a passion for helping people and spent many hours at the Association for the Rehabilitation of the Brain Injured, offering physical therapy for his brother Nonnie who suffered a severe brain injury, plus other clients who required help. Lorn also sat on the board of directors at ARBI (Association for the Rehabilitation of the Brain Injured).

Lorn was generous with his time and constantly helped his family whenever they needed it. When Lorn’s mother passed, Lorn’s desire to keep the family close grew, and he initiated and organized a Howes family Christmas party just to see the family together. For over 30 years these parties grew to where it became necessary to rent community halls.

In Lorn’s name, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Association for the Rehabilitation of the Brain Injured, 311 Cedar Crescent SW, Calgary, AB, T3C 3A4 Telephone: (403) 242-7116, website https://www.arbi.ca/donate.
