Obituary of Mark Andrew Gloeckler
March 20, 1984 - Regina, Saskatchewan
November 19, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta
Though our hearts are heavy, in loving celebration, we say farewell to Mark Andrew “Squiggy” Gloeckler, who passed away at the age of 40 on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, after bravely battling cancer.
Mark is survived by his father, Keith, and two older siblings, Paul and Sue. He was predeceased by his loving mother, Marilyn, in 2023.
If you know Mark, you know that his favourite things were friends, family, golf, cars, hockey and music. And dogs… definitely dogs - even though they weren’t his own LOL.
Mark was born in Regina, SK, on March 20,1984, but the family soon moved to Calgary in 1985, which became Mark’s forever home. He grew up over the years going to public school and graduated from Henry Wise Wood High School in 2002. After graduating, Mark started working at Sears while trying to figure out his future path, until getting his first job revolving around the golf industry at Heritage Point Golf Club, where he lovingly inherited his nickname Squiggy. After many memorable years building friendships and his golf game, Mark moved on to become an invaluable and loved staff member at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club in 2012, where he worked until his passing.
As Mark grew older, golf became a deep passion, so when he started working at Heritage Pointe, he was in heaven. Through those years, Mark entered many tournaments with friends and colleagues and enjoyed building an environment of great friendships and memories (though I hear that there are always some choice wordings happening from time to time during a game of golf LOL). He even won an award for the 2007 HP Men’s Championship Flight, Low Gross Champion. He continued to golf at many clubs and eventually in 2016, Mark was excited to become an associate player for 2 years at his long desired Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club, until becoming a member in 2018, where he continued to love playing, honing his game, and spending time both on and off the greens with friends.
Mark also grew up with a love for playing league hockey, playing with speed and accuracy and often receiving Most Valuable Player despite his size. His love for hockey followed him into adult shinny hockey and of course watching the NHL games with friends and family.
Mark also loved driving nice cars and going to car shows. When he bought his 2013 Toyota Scion, he started to get involved in personalizing his own vehicle and loved to share the improvements, detailing and tricks he implemented, none so surprising as changing his car from black to white. He was then entering his own car into shows.
Mark loved listening to music, whether in his car, or in the house, he was always looking for an uplifting, or good beat. He was always excited to share new groups and sounds with his friends from his favourite groups like Shallou, San Holo, Gryffin, Kygo, Nora En Pure, Uttermost and so many more. If you were looking for a song to fit a video you were making or just for yourself, Mark was happy to find one in the genre for you.
Mark also enjoyed travelling, but you can be sure it almost always included golf or an amazing concert. He did get to the Big Apple in 2017 to hang out with a friend, but also spent some time with his sister Sue and her friends, who just so happened to be there at the same time. While there, he got to see a New York Rangers game at the Madison Square Gardens which had been a bucket list item for him.
Mark will be most remembered for his constant smile, cheerful bright soul, big heart, being down to earth, and a willingness to help everyone. It was always important to him that he treated everyone as if they were a close friend, and I can see that reflected in all the beautiful comments coming in from those who knew and loved him.
