Obituary of Ronald Ernest Davey
October 17, 1949 - Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
November 24, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta
With breaking hearts, we share the news of Ron’s passing on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at the age of 75 years.
Ron was born in Saskatoon on October 17, 1949, to Anne and Roy Davey, joining big brother Ken to complete the family. He grew up in Saskatoon and studied law at the University of Saskatchewan.
In 1975, he was called to the Alberta bar in Calgary. His law career was diverse including private practice, Legal Aid, and finally, the Crown Prosecutor’s office. He was an expert mediator—fair-minded and objective. Throughout his 42-year career, he earned the respect of his colleagues and the Courts. To say he practiced with honour and integrity is an understatement.
Ron spent many happy years with his high school sweetheart, Sonja Chycoski, who relocated with him to Calgary after law school.
While Ron made his living practicing law, he was a man of many talents and interests. Throughout his life, he was athletic and fit. He was a formidable runner, a beast in the weight room, a middling squash player, an avid downhill skier and a so-so golfer. He completed 10k’s and marathons and was a regular in the Kananaskis 100 and the Jasper Banff Relay.
He was a decades-long member of the Wildrose Region of the Porsche Club of America. His 1975 Porsche 911 was his pride and joy, but he made room in his automotive heart for anything with an engine including a nifty Corvette when he was young man, a 944 Porsche, a couple of Jeep Wranglers and a few classic sporty Mercedes Benz. In motorcycles, his tastes ran to his gorgeous Honda VFR and a stunning sport-touring BMW. Ron loved cars, F1 and motorcycles. And if you are curious, Ron would want you to know that it is pronounced, “POR-shuh.”
Ron was an adventurer and traveller. Bareboat sailing in the Caribbean, skiing in the Rockies, beach trips to Hawaii and Mexico, fast motorcycle trips throughout the West and the Pacific Northwest, tours of Italy and Germany, car shows in California, visits to Vancouver Island and of course, home to see family in Saskatoon and Kelowna. Ron and his brother Ken cruised the car shows in Saskatoon every year.
Ron was a good and loyal friend. He treated everyone as an equal and always took the time to share a kind word and a warm smile. If you met him, you liked him.
Cherishing memories of Ron and always loved by his family are his nephew Kenny Davey, and sister-in-law Donna Hurren. His absence will be deeply felt by his wide circle of friends.
Ron was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Anne Davey; and his brother Kenneth Davey.
There will be a farewell party in the spring to celebrate Ron. Details to follow in the New Year.
In memory of Ron, hug your family and take your car for a spirited drive when the roads clear.
