Condolences
My husband, Jim, and I first met Karl and Lucy around 2012 when our daughter, Kelly, moved to Calgary to be with, Mark Trozzo, their grandson. I told everyone who asked why she had moved, that she “fell in love with a Canadian lumberjack!”, not too far from the truth! The first time that I met Karl and Lucy they had come to dinner at Mark and Kelly’s house for a traditional “American Thanksgiving” dinner. During and after dinner, I truly enjoyed getting to know them. When the pear schnapps came out, I was introduced to the German custom. A great memory that I hold is Karl toasting, “I’ll drink to that!” It became our own private joke which we repeated every time we got together. They welcomed us into their home with warm hospitality and graciousness. We will always cherish the gifts that they have given us!
We were deeply shocked to hear the news of Karl's death in Germany! Our families were closely connected for decades, the annual visits and activities with Karl were always a pleasure, in 1991 our first visit to Sault Ste. Marie was for several weeks and our first daughter learned to walk with Karl, there was always a lot of laughter, we had fun and no birthday went by without a phone call with Karl and Lucy, his first sentence was always "how are you" he never complained. The last time we saw him was at the end of April this year when we were visiting Calgary with our youngest daughter and grandson. Our last phone call was in October. We mourn with Lucy and her whole family and are deeply saddened. We will always carry Karl in our hearts! With deepest sympathy Albert and Carmen Schahn
