Obituary of Don and Roxanne CARLSON

Died February 15, 2014 – Calgary, AB Happily married for 37 years, Don and Roxanne Carlson were loving parents, children, a sister and brother, an aunt and uncle, and friends to many. With three adult children, they were beginning to enjoy more vacations, recently taking a cruise to the Caribbean, visiting New York and Ottawa, and making numerous trips to Hawaii, Seattle and Banff. As a family, the Carlsons went to California, Hawaii, Mexico and Florida. They were looking forward to upcoming trips to Barbados and Quebec. Don and Roxanne are survived by their children Graig, Laura and Danielle. Don is survived by father Eldon, brothers Kevin (Susan) and Robert (Virgie), and predeceased by mother Margaret and sister Lori Anne. Roxanne is survived by parents Ernie and Isabella Watson, brother Rick (Paula) and aunt Joyce Masciangelo. Don was an active hockey player and coach, and in his professional life was the long-time manager of Albern Coins. He received his Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing from the University of Calgary and worked at Gulf Oil for many years. Involved in the Calgary sports community since his youth, Don played baseball, golf, bowling, curling and hockey. He also coached his children’s hockey and soccer teams for many years. A lifelong goalie, Don continued to play hockey weekly with the Calgary Sharks, travelling to Montreal, Las Vegas and Phoenix for tournaments in recent years. He also made annual golf trips to Whitefish with his brothers and son. In his early 20s Don was a league umpire where he met Roxanne while she was watching one of her brother’s baseball games. They were married a year later. A psychologist with the Calgary Board of Education (CBE), Roxanne enjoyed reading and sharing her love of books, especially with her book club. After teaching for many years, Roxanne returned to school and received both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Psychology from the University of Calgary. During this time she was an active parent and proud “dance mom”. She loved working with kids, and was well respected and beloved by her team of coworkers at CBE. Appreciating Canadian culture, Roxanne usually had her radio tuned into the CBC, and attended many Leonard Cohen concerts. A Memorial Service will be held at McInnis & Holloway’s Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Don and Roxanne Carlson Memorial Fund for Youth Development.
