Obituary of Rosemary Rose Helen WILKINSON
April 7, 1923 – Delia, Alberta
June 20, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta
We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our mom, Rose, at the age of 95.
Our mom’s role in life was to look after people even when they didn’t know they needed it. She stayed on the farm with her dad in the Dirty Thirties while the rest of her family moved into town. In the Army, during WWII, she looked after her “girls” and she continued to do so for seventy years. Friends and acquaintances often found themselves on the receiving end of her care and once you were there, you stayed. She kept track of people long after they moved away and always tried to honour the promises she made to them.
Mom and dad worked for any years nurturing children as foster parents. She was a geriatric social worker for many years and helped seniors and their families cope with the challenges of aging. Mom was a proud member of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps during WWII and she worked for sixty years to keep the contributions and memories of the CWAC alive in the consciousness of Canadians.
Mom was honoured to be selected to meet the Queen at the Military Museums during the Royal Visit to Calgary in 2005. She was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation in recognition of her significant contributions in the service of veterans.
Mom was a twenty-five plus year volunteer at the Military Museums where she made many valued friends. Her last volunteer shift was in December 2017. As well, she and dad were members of the Association of Retired Postal Workers for many years and she took over from dad on the board of the Association. She was working on plans for ARPE’s annual Stampede lunch until last week.
Rose is survived by her children Tricia, Kerri and Scott (Darlene), and her beloved granddaughter Amy, as well as a loving extended family.
She was predeceased by our dad Frank in 2008.
A celebration of Rose’s life will be held at on Saturday, June 30, 2018 from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. Please enter through the Naval Museum, on the east side of the museum.
