Obituary of Andrew George UNGAR

April 9, 1936 – Budapest, Hungary December 7, 2013 – Calgary, AB Andrew Ungar, our beloved father and grandfather, passed away suddenly at his home in Calgary on December 7th at the age of 77. The younger of two children, Andrew was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary, and immigrated to Canada in 1956. Living in Montreal and working as a draftsman, he met the love of his life, Mary Wyman, a teacher from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, whom he married in 1960. There they raised their family until moving to Calgary in 1980. Despite often working two or even three jobs at a time, Andrew always found time for his many passions; watching, coaching and refereeing soccer, enjoying the opera, complaining about the Montreal Canadiens and travelling the world were among his favorites. Later in life, when he wasn’t clocking kilometers in his twice-weekly swim, he was playing bridge; in person, when there were games being played, and on-line when there were none. No morning was complete without his daily Suduko. Family reunions were incomplete without his reminiscences and endless bad jokes. As a father and grandfather he was loving and supportive in every way. He cherished his friendships, and used his persistence to track down friends and to organize his 50th high school reunion back in Budapest. He would be very disappointed to be missing his 60th. Andrew was predeceased in 2009 by his wife Mary. Left behind to mourn his passing are son Richard with wife Karen and grandsons Noah and Aaron; son Garnet with wife Gina and grandsons Samuel and Peter; sister Panni (Ban); family throughout the country and friends whose lives he touched.
