For the family of Alice Shepard,
To Art, Colleen and Russ Shepard,
Jean let me know that Alice passed away last week. I had just mailed a card to her as I have been thinking a lot about her and your family; when I sent it I did not know she was so ill. I hope everything was peaceful at the end.
Alice was one of my favorite patients. She often came in after some calamity caused by her energetic gardening, canning, or cleaning activity that she probably shouldn’t have been doing! Even when her health declined, she refused to believe she was no longer capable of all things. She always had a smile and a hug for me, and did her best to put on a brave face when she wasn’t feeling well. She taught me a lot about shared decision-making with patients, as she usually knew what she wanted to do, and was not afraid to express it.
It was a privilege to have known her, and to witness the strong support and love within your family.
I will always remember Alice.
