Obituary of Carol Ann WESTBERG

December 4, 1954 – January 24, 2013 Carol Westberg of Calgary passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at the age of 58 years. Carol was a dearly loved daughter, sister, mom, Oma, friend, and warrior. Born in Broadview, SK, Carol’s early years were spent moving around the province with her family who finally settled in the small town of Saltcoats, SK in 1967. It is here that she started her own family, became a care aid, local artist and valued community member. Moving to Calgary, AB in 1999 Carol followed her passions establishing herself as a landscaper and professional organizer. She was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2004. A fierce, brave, and dedicated warrior whose focus and mission became one of helping others with this devastating disease. In her own words “I am not the type to ask why me but rather Why not me and go ahead and TRY me!!!” So the diagnosis of myeloma has changed my life or rather forced me to change my life…my focus and mission became one of helping others diagnosed with this devastating disease and I have really found this journey has had more blessings than sad times”. Carol started the Myeloma support group in Calgary and co-founded the Southern Alberta Myeloma Patient Society (SAMPS) whose mission is to raise public awareness of this rare cancer and to raise funds for Myeloma research. The inukshuk became Carol’s personal symbol of strength and guidance on her life’s journey. They are a powerful guardian guiding travelers along the best and safest paths. She loved driving to the mountains where she would often build these inukshuks and return home to replicate them in her paintings. Carol loved her family above all. Always putting the needs of family, friends, and fellow warriors before her own. Carol is survived by her Soul mate Doug Bauer; her parents Alvin and Helen Westberg; her children, Craig Hanson, Shona (Chris) Evans, Lee (Shantel) Hanson; eight grandchildren, Seija, Bronte, Kai, Wyatt, Zaiden, Jager, Oakley, Cruz and a grandchild on the way; her sisters Bev (Randy) Westberg, Leslie (Gerry) Adam and their children Hannah and Justin; her brother Dean (Shelly) Westberg and their children Carly and Avery. Funeral Services will be held at the Saltcoats Community Hall on Monday, February 4, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will also be held in conjunction with the Multiple Miles for Myeloma Walk/Run to be held in July in Calgary. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
