Obituary of Jean Louise DUNLAP

September 10, 1917 – August 30, 2012 Jean Louise Dunlap (nee Kaufman) was embraced by the loving arms of her Lord on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at the age of 94 years. Jean was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on September 10, 1917 to Howard and Ethel Kaufman. Except for a brief period in California as a youth, she spent most of her formative years in Tulsa through high school and the University of Tulsa from which she graduated with a BA degree in 1939. Jean married her high school sweetheart George Dunlap on February 10, 1940. She lived in Tulsa where George was employed by Sun Oil Co. until she enlisted in the US Navy following the entry of the United States in World War II. They lived in Washington, D.C. until George was assigned as a Naval Intelligence Officer to a post in the Pacific, at which point Jean returned to Tulsa to wait out the war. When George returned to his company he was transferred to Dallas, Texas, where in September, 1946 they were blessed with the birth of their only son, Richard. In February 1949 Jean and George were transferred by Sun Oil to Calgary for a period of “two years, no longer than five”. They never moved again except for once within the city of Calgary. Jean spent her entire married life as a housewife and mother and was also very active in the life and activities of Grace Presbyterian Church. The source of one of Jean’s greatest pleasures was “doing” for others, and her loving, giving spirit will be truly missed by many. She had a brief flirtation with golf and a long flirtation with bridge until the ravages of macular degeneration gradually robbed her of both of those pleasures. Jean was also active in her book club (which she was instrumental in founding) and investment club, both of which she continued with after the loss of her sight because she liked to “listen”, and treasured the company of her friends. Jean excelled at any activities that involved being social and her friendships were a very important part of her life. Jean is survived by her son Rick, of Kalispell, Montana, a brother Howard (Suzanne) of Atlanta, Georgia and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. A Celebration of Jean’s Life will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church (1009 – 15 Avenue SW) on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to Grace Presbyterian Church 1009 – 15 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2R 0S5 or to the charity of your choice.
