Condolences
Don always had time to explain the workings of sophisticated toys like jetex jet engines that could be mounted on balsa airplanes. His shop was a magical place for young Calgarians in the sixties and it was my incentive to a Herald paperboy.
Dear Tammy & family,
In this sorrowful time, we extend our heartfelt condolences.

We are deeply saddened to hear of Don’s passing. My late parents, James (Jim) and Janet Kelly, he and Connie were good friends and we joined their Lions events on many occasions. Don was of help to us when we started in the “sheep business” and gave us several books on the subject that we still have and for which we’ve been grateful for a few times. We still have the antique piece of farm equipment he kindly gifted us, even helping us haul it out of the “back 40” several years ago. Despite not having seen Don in several years we have thought of him often. Sleep in peace Don, say hello to Connie for us and mom and dad.
As a teenager growing up in Canmore, no trip to Calgary was complete without a visit to the newly opened Don’s Hobby Shop. I’m not sure what it was about Don, but he was always so much more to me than just a guy who ran a hobby shop. Maybe it was that, despite my tender age, he treated me as a friend and an equal.
Years after I stopped building model airplanes, and had my own business, I ran into Don one day. He still remembered me and we chatted about the hard effort needed to run your own business. I never saw him again, but I often wondered how he was doing.
I was, of course, saddened to read his obituary, but I was also pleased to find out all the other things he had done in his life, no doubt touching many other people in his own quiet way, as he had touched me, and living to a good age. And that made me smile.
Dear Holly and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Thinking about you lots and sending you love.
Holly,
You are one of the most caring and thoughtful people I know. I have no doubt that your love and support is what helped your father get through the hardest of times.
On behalf of the Bearspaw Lions Club, we would like to express our sincere condolences on the passing of Don. He made such a significant contribution to the success of the club through hundreds of volunteer hours, that he was awarded a Lifetime Membership Award. He was a well liked and well respected member of our club.

I wonder if Don knew how many lives of young children he may have influenced. I and my twin brother from Canmore in the late 50’s and early 60’s would on occasion make it to Calgary and our first stop was always Don’s Hobby shop. We bought many an airplane kit and lots of dope (paint), wheels and accessories for our planes. I still have some of the original models and still fly model planes today at age 75 even though now living a long way from Calgary (Toronto). Hobbies have given me a life time of pleasure. I worked as a professional engineer at the Calgary Herald (just across from his store) in the 70’s and would drop in now and again to see Don and maybe buy some hobby related item. He of course still remembered me from my teenage years. I am currently helping my grandson to build his first balsa model. Rest in peace Don. My heartfelt condolences to your family.
