Obituary of Henry Hwang KING
November 2, 1928 – March 4, 2012
Henry Hwang King of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at the age of 83 years.
Henry King was born on November 2, 1928 in Paracale, Camarines Norte, Philippines to Leon King and Siok Jing Hwang of Sha Ti, Fujian, China. He grew up in the small mining town where he fought the Japanese forces in his early teens alongside his guerrilla leader father before escaping to Manila. In his youth, he loved to play basketball with his brothers and friends. As he told it in later years, he would play out under the sun until he was as brown as the proverbial nut. After the war, he studied business administration & finance in university. Being the oldest boy, he unconditionally supported the whole family, allowing his brothers and sister to enjoy a better life and to attend university. His professional experiences ranged from shipping representative to agri-business produce buyer to bank executive.
He retired to Calgary with his wife and two youngest daughters in 1986 to join his oldest daughter and her family. He was a most noble, loving and nurturing husband, father and grandfather. Having a great respect of nature and the finer things in life, he loved both the ruggedness of nature and the complex structure of classical music and instilled both loves in each of his children. He was known to families and friends as a quiet, happy, generous and very intelligent man with a broad range of knowledge and interests who loved to read and frequented numerous libraries around Calgary. He was also known for being a vocal enthusiast for all things China and Chinese. But above everything else, he impressed everyone who had known him with his personal warmth coupled with his trademarked honesty and fondness for laughter. He will be greatly missed.
Henry is survived by his two sons and three daughters, Mary (Kee Gee) Low, Herman (Diana) King, Arthur (Myla) King, Aileen (Roland) Leonardo, and Maybelle (Jomil) Cosia; and ten grandchildren, Kyna, Keegan, Kyla, Keysha, Abigail, Matthew, Regine, Regan, Joshua, and Jeremiah. Henry was predeceased by his childhood sweetheart and beloved wife of forty-eight years, Siu Tin (Sio Bi), in May 2002.
