Obituary of Walter Kornelius GJOSUND
August 4, 1940 – March 4, 2012
It is with great shock and sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear Walter, beloved husband to Celia, and father to David Steimer, Sarah Malley (Brent) and Ruth Keon (Christian). He will be missed by his grandchildren; Beckham, Kate, Gwen, Brady and Jake. Walter passed away at home in the arms of his loving wife.
He was the rock of our family, affectionately known as ‘his lordship’ we all looked to him and waited for his jokes, advice or smile. Generous to a fault, he loved his family and pets fiercely.
Walter was born and raised in Swaziland, son to Norwegian missionaries, Trygve & Anna Gjosund. Walter is survived by his siblings and their spouses, David & Marilyn Gjosund (Calgary), Eivind Gjosund (South Africa), Ruth & Bjorn Johansen (South Africa) and Margaret & Erling Reistad (Norway), he was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law Andre & Else Gjosund (Norway). He is also remembered by his wife’s brother, Alan Mcdowell (England), and longtime family friend Pat Lambert.
Walter’s passion and vocation was medicine. Up until his death he continued to do research, practice and take medical courses and ultimately assisting the people he truly loved to help, his patients.
Walter started his career in England before coming to Canada in 1974 where he practiced in Shaunavon, Regina, Fort McMurray, Calgary and Cochrane. Most of his working years were spent in Fort McMurray where he was chief of staff at the Fort McMurray hospital, active in the United Way, Keyano College Foundation and the Rotary Club.
In lieu of flowers donation cheques may be made payable to the “Dr. Walter Gjosund Memorial Bursary” in support of students aspiring to the medical profession.
Death leaves a heartache no one can heal
Love needs a memory no one can steal
